Inspired by the Girl Scout "Wonders of Water Journey", these Girl Scouts tell the story of Illinois and rain. Once upon a time, Illinois was covered by prairies and wetlands. But as the pioneers moved west, the prairies were turned into farmland. Then more people came, and they built houses and roads, parking lots and buildings. With all that progress, it seems like people forgot about the rain. Now when it rains, the water doesn't get a chance to soak into the ground. Stormwater runoff leads to the ponds and the rivers, carrying pollution with it from the chemicals we put on our yards and the salt we use on the streets. The pollution hurts the fish and other critters in the water. One of the ways we can help is to bring back the prairies and wetlands. Prairie and wetland plants help water to soak into the ground, filtering out pollution and recharging the water for our drinking wells. You can plant a prairie in your own backyard or by your neighborhood pond. Prairies and wetlands save water, filter out pollution, provide a home for animals, and make the fish happy!
