Initial thoughts blog post and native footage here: http://gopb.co/blackmagic4k UHD compressed H264 version available from here to download for Pro and PLUS Vimeo members. Smoking sucks. Need help quitting then go to http://quit.org.uk Hypocrisy then featuring smoking in this? Yes. My dad smokes cigars occasionally, his only vice and after appearing in a number of my reviews smoking one of his bad boys, especially the one that B&H have used on their monitors in their store for about 3 years now, he asked if I wanted to test another camera out one day he said he would be keen...he liked the super slow motion FS700 one the best! So this is my first footage from the Blackmagic 4k. I haven't had a chance to test much of it out at all. So when dad came up for lunch I got it all set up. Two Gekko LED lights (http://www.gekkolite.com) , Canon 100mm Macro L, 85mm F1.2, 24-70 F2.8 II L, Small HD DP7 Pro and the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K with V-Lock battery on it. Fujichrome Astia 100. 10% off with code bloom at gopb.co/filmconvert Sharpened in Premiere CC by 18%. My initial thoughts of the camera are being written right now. A full review will come with a lot more time using the camera has elapsed. As always these reviews are done in my own time and for zero money and take a huge amount of work so any use of the Vimeo TipJar and affiliates on my site are greatly appreciated and help me keep the site running and make the reviews. BLOG POST HERE: http://wp.me/p3ggTR-87D Filmed at "Giant's Causeway" in County Antrim, Northern Ireland on the Blackmagic 4K. Hence the title of this piece! Shot at ISO 200,400,800 except the 800 shots I had to leave out because of issues with the image quality. Lots of speckles on it plus the noise is quite ugly at that point. Lenses were the Sigma 18-35 F1.8, Tamron 24-70 F2.8 and Canon 70-200 F4 IS L. Tripod was the Really Right Stuff 5 stage carbon fibre and the new and rather nice, but pricey FH-350 head. Zacuto rig and V-Mount battery set up as detailed on my blog post. The first day I used just the back screen, nightmare. Impossible to judge. Second day was with the Small HD DP7 Pro OLED...SO MUCH EASIER!! Much this isn't that portable and it's quite heavy. Shot in 25p with 180 degree shutter apart from a couple that needed a stop more light and I didn't want to use the 800 so they are at 360. Also my 82mm Variable ND broke when a lens got dropped so some shots have 45 degree shutter. Only the low light shots were wide open, most were stopped down the F5.6 for better quality. The sigma at F1.8 is really rather good !! www.nationaltrust.org.uk/giants-causeway MUSIC COMPOSED BY RICHARD WAGNER SIGRIED'S DEATH & FUNERAL MARCH FROM GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG THE RING CYCLE PERFORMED BY THE APOLLO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA LICENSED FROM PREMIUMBEAT.COM THANKS TO: THE NATIONAL TRUST YANNICK HAUSLER THE UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER CAMILLA LONG ADRIAN HICKEY MERVYN MCKAY HELEN JORGENSEN

COLOUR VERSION HERE: https://vimeo.com/88025371 Graded with FilmConvert from "Film Mode" on the camera and preset. Kodak T-Max 400. Grain 39% 10% off with code bloom at gopb.co/filmconvert B&W regrade for myself as the contrasty lighting really leant itself to it so I wanted to see and of course to share. I do prefer the colour one though. DISCLAIMER: This is early test footage, still getting to know the camera back then. I've since become more accustomed to shooting with it and have found more in the camera than before. Will post new footage soon. This is pretty much to take a glance at the camera JUST shooting. I had gone out with it much earlier, this time with a more finished version. If you were curious about global shutter, FOV, aesthetic, I think it shows. Ignore the color for the most part, to me it feels a bit over saturated but it was a one pass. TECHNICAL: B4K "Fourks" ISO 400 and 800 ProRes 4K Canon 70-200/2.8 for most of it Zeiss Otus 55/1.4 @ 1.4 near the end Tokina 11-16/2.8 Hoya ProND Hoya IR Cut

Ever since I attended the Blackmagic Cinema Camera road show in London 2 years back I dreamt of owning my very own one. After waiting a year for the 2.5K version and cancelling the order for a new 4K at the last minute last year, I was surprised to get a call from the official retailer Jigsaw that it had finally arrived. Did I need a new camera, could I afford the luxury, did I really have the time to learn Da Vinci Resolve that comes with it and all the hardware to cope with TBs of data? The answer quite simple was 'no'. But I did go ahead, there is something about it, maybe the videos I've scene, it's beautiful but unergonomic shape, the reduced price, ability for raw and thirst for gigabytes, highly capable grading software and ultimately a unique and serious piece of kit. How does it compare to the 1DC? Like driving a different car but an equally exhilarating ride. As soon as you pick up the BMCC and attach a lens to it you realise that it is pretty heavy and after you attach the sun hood you try to figure out how to hold it. It's a solid metal sculptured work of art and the square red record button on the front brilliant. They call it a production camera, designed for the studio but that is not me, neither attaching it to a rig or buying an extra battery. So I took it for a little test drive to Wembley, handheld with a 24-70mm Canon EF lens and it sure did attract alot of curious attention. My kids took it turns to see if they could lift it and I'm sure were impressed by my newly developed technique of holding such a beast, 'one day' I told them. The sun was shining brightly and so the zebra and focus peaking came in very useful. I was surprised that the battery lasted so long and upon returning home had to figure out on the best way to edit and grade it. Da Vinci Resolve seems great and intuitive and after a little while I produced this. Please forgive me for all my sins with regards to any shortcomings of this short film as there is alot to learn and for me it's all new. I think it's strengths are portraits and people and quite enjoy the freedom of using it naked, you do however need some additional equipment for capturing decent sound. I am happy with the images and have fallen in love with the camera and all the things that come with it, can't wait for the Raw update. Happy Holi to everyone, music from the film Queen, 'Jugni' :)
