      • DENY NAI: A Public Affairs Campaign to Save Our Skies and Protect US Airline Jobs

When the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) faced an uphill battle against Norwegian Air International (NAI), a new foreign state-owned carrier seeking to gain more access to the US marketplace, they turned to the Podesta Group for help. NAI was seeking a permit that would grant the airline unprecedented access to fly in and out of the United States, taking routes away from domestic carriers and threatening tens of thousands of US aviation jobs. In order to protect the industry, the Podesta Group had to convince opinion leaders, the media, consumers and policymakers that the US Department of Transportation (DOT) should deny the application of this foreign carrier that, if granted, promised to ease American consumers’ pocket books and spur tourism in a host of American cities. Nominated for Public Affairs campaign of the Year by PR Week for our efforts, the Podesta Group devised and executed a winning holistic government relations and public relations strategy that identified the audiences that ALPA needed to reach and their corresponding views on issues surrounding NAI, crafted messages customized to appeal to these varied audiences, and engaged relevant media outlets and influencers to build a community of advocates to champion the cause.

We talk to a journalist and author who conducted research on the storm, the systems that tracked it and found out how our weather forecasting, tracking and evacuation protocols and equipment need to be modernized to deal with the extreme weather that climate change will bring us in the future.
