Bob Ippolito was the CTO and cofounder of Mochi Media, and creator of Mochi Web. Bob started using Erlang in 2006 to prototype an ad server, and it quickly became the de facto platform for building servers at Mochi. Bob's open source contributions to the Erlang community include mochiweb, statebox, egeoip and kvc. In this talk Bob will discuss different techniques and data structures for weighted random choice in Erlang. Random choice is an essential part of many systems, especially distributed systems, such as ad servers. The concepts in this this talk will be demonstrated with a "learning" IRC bot that builds a Markov chain and uses it to make sentences. http://www.meetup.com/Erlang-User-Group-Krakow/events/142964072/ http://www.meetup.com/Erlang-User-Group-Krakow/ http://soerlang.tumblr.com/

A short film made using random choice of video footage and audio clips but with the purpose in mind of including the musical track In The Shadows, by my son. The song inspired me to make a film and when I asked myself what the film is about and what is in the shadows I realised it was me in relationship with my mum. I captured footage of a telephone conversation I had with her addressing the past.

Inspired by a song, In The Shadows, by my son, I edited this film from clips I captured over the last three months. I numbered each clip, wrote each number on a tiny piece of paper, folded up the pieces of paper and put them in a plastic cup. I chose seven pieces. The first and last clips are the same, but the last is reversed. During the editing process I became aware of a pattern I get into with my mum. This film is dedicated to that particular piece of dysfunction.
