    Over the past century, the thick southern forest of this national field study is the only part of our country that is cooling. This phenomenon has spawned important questions about what might be in the air causing this cooling. Under the leadership of Rutgers' atmospheric chemist Annmarie Carlton, more than 100 scientists have gathered in the forests of Alabama to sample the atmosphere with weather balloons and government planes in a race to understand how our planet is responding to climate change.
