4-channel sound installation, 2014 acoustic absorber panels, 4 speakers, 3 metronomes On the basis of Steim’s Studio 1, REC investigates the architecture, the specific acoustics and working situations in recording studios. This examination sets a focus on unnoticed structures and elements of music production, such as coordination and communication between musicians and the acoustic configuration of the studio. By demounting and rearranging the acoustic absorber panels, the artist collective Faxen highlights the sculptural qualities of these unique objects. This setting is combined with a four channel installation based on documentary material - mainly the count-in - of various recording sessions. http://faxen-collective.net Exhibitions - Studio (take2), Steim, Amsterdam

In the third episode of the series, "Monsoon wind", Alessio is wearing flex sensors on his elbows and knees. A Monsoon wind is blowing him away, but he can control it, increase and reduce its power and sound, through the movements of his arms and legs. http://cargocollective.com/projectflex

Every week a one minute improvisation episode – that explains one different possibility to use the system to play music while dancing- will come out. In the second episode of the series, "Sneaky legs", Alessio is wearing flex sensors on his knees. When he bends his legs he can plays notes. One leg sounds like a vibraphone, and the other one like a contrabass. These sounds give to the improvisation a sneaky atmosphere, like an old "police and thieves" movie or an Hanna-Barbera cartoon. http://cargocollective.com/projectflex

© 2014 Emile Lagarde

              • Korhan Erel solo performance at Overtoom 301 Amsterdam

                from Korhan Erel / Added

This performance was at Overtoom 301 (Amsterdam) in October 2005 and was my first solo computer performance ever. The event was called "Dutch Mulch Night", where performers played using Ross Bencina's Audiomulch software. My performance was a "screenless" set with structured improvisations. The Guns'n Roses track you hear comes from a radio that I was processing (at least trying) live. I was in Amsterdam for a residency at STEIM, where I was working on my computer instruments for playing freely improvised music. The foundations of Omnibus, my collection of instruments I use today, were laid in those days.

“Every town and village had a hall where dancing could take place. The bigger dance halls had orchestras, the smaller ones had a three piece band or records, sometimes only a piano. Today’s generation have no idea what part the dance halls played in keeping up morale" BBC. An Archive of World War Two memories. S'odinonsuonare with Maria Mavridou. Residency at STEIM, Amsterdam. This project is supported by the project DE.MO./MOVIN’UP II sess. 2013 by MINISTERO DEI BENI E DELLE ATTIVITà CULTURALI E DEL TURISMO and GAI. Flex is a long time project about the relationship between choreography and music composition. Our research has began building an instrument you don’t play with your hands, like most of musical instruments are done, but with arms and legs. In this way we can amplify the motions of the body playing and put this at the same level of producing sounds; now we have a new interaction between dance and music. An electronic wireless instrument has been specially created to allow the performer to generate sounds with movements. The device consists of sensors (flex sensors) capable of providing a numeric value corresponding to their same flexion. This data is transmitted through a wireless system to a computer. Wearing these sensitives elements through the sleeves on elbows and knees you can get a value that corresponds to the bending of limbs. In the last rehearsals we eventually focused on sounds used in radio drama, thriller movie effects and old cartoons movements. We have presented at Steim “Dance during wartime” the first part of the project Flex. It is a dance performance about cultural source of conflicts, how the media talk about conflicts and how they are perceived by the people that are not in. Dance as a way to face better the conflicts.

There are seven voices coming from all directions. Every voice has its own speaker. Speaker number eight, is the seat of the conductor. The audience is sitting in the middle and can experience some voices closer then others. This way there is an extremely realistic image painted and depending on where you sit in the room, your experience could be very different. Performed by: Marieke de Zwaan, Daan Couzijn, Rutger de Groot, Jasper Hutte, Koos van der Vaart, Annelieke Zantinge. Directed & Composed by: Emile Lagarde © 2014
