Yes-I do think “Avatar” (directed and co-written by James Cameron), is worth the hype. Having gotten that out of the way, let’s discuss the merits of this new Science Fiction classic. This is an epic film, and it’s all fuelled by Jim Cameron’s vision. It’s filled with jaw-droppingly beautiful alien landscapes, and populated by all kinds of cool creatures big and small. The attention to detail is so great you’d swear you were watching a really exciting PBS documentary. But this is a world populated by 10 feet tall blue natives, flying dragon-like beasties, floating electrified jelly-fish type beings, and lots and lots more. And none of them seem fake, or computer generated-they all appear to be living, breathing, fully emoting beings. I won’t get heavily into the plot-there’s a lot going on, but all the elements pay off. The story involves a military backed corporate take-over of the planet Pandora. It’s a lot like the old days when the Indians were killed or kicked off their land, because the government wanted something from it. The Na’vi people are literally “one with the land”, living in symbiosis with their planet. Everyone and everything living or dead are connected--sort of like the “Force”. Into this wonderland drops soldier Jake Sully-a paralyzed Marine, whose mind gets linked with an Avatar, a genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrid. He can now walk, run, fight and make love in his new 10 foot body. I could keep going on about the plot, but I don’t want to turn you off by making you think that this is just a complex, crazy story you can’t relate to. On the contrary, it’s a very relatable film on many levels. It’s a story about understanding our link with nature. It’s about bridging the gap between people of different cultures, and it’s also about a mighty military taking whatever it wants, regardless of the horrible outcome for the native people and lands. I viewed “Avatar” in Imax 3D, and I feel a film of this scope is worth the extra cost. The 3D is not a gimmick, but another tool to help you really feel immersed in the spectacular world of Pandora. Like the recently released film “A Christmas Carol” this flick uses motion-capture technology to help bring to life the Na’vi. The female lead is played by Zoe Saldana, with a nice ferocious edge and feral quality. Sam Worthington convincingly plays both the human Jake Scully, and his blue Avatar self. Cameron favorite Sigourney Weaver is also along for the ride, also pulling double duty. Cameron has made some wonderful technically strides in this film, and almost makes you forget you are not watching real creatures. Is it the best science-fiction film I’ve ever seen? No, at almost 3 hours long it could’ve been tightened up a bit, but it is an impressive, thrilling and moving adventure, filled with dazzling vistas, multitudes of bizarre creations, and a plot with some social significances. It’s a blockbuster of a film with every dollar up there on the screen, and James Cameron does not disappoint. http://YourGeekNews.com - James Cameron definitely made the most of nearly 15 years and 300 Million dollars making Avatar, because it looks and feels completely unlike any movie ever. Maybe it's the tasteful use of 3D technology, maybe the striking resemblance the CG characters have to their human actor equivalents, or maybe it was the fact that an entirely computer generated world actually felt REAL for the first time ever, but Avatar definitely knocked us both out... what about you?
