Being There: At The Heart of Engagement Nicholas Sung, Airbnb Nicholas explains how to look to your intuition to lead you toward creating compelling visual narratives. Using oral storytelling, peer critique, writing, and figurative drawing, you can work to develop short cinematic storyboard sequences. Poetic sensibilities and systematic processes enable designers and product developers to explore an approach to visual storytelling that foregrounds empathy and emotional salience. Uncertainty Principle: Basic Principles in Street Design Paul Chasan, SF Planning Department Shared streets, also known as living streets or woonerfs, embrace uncertainty and ambiguity to foster social life and improve pedestrian safety. Shared streets retain limited auto use, but intentionally remove the distinction and exclusivity between pedestrian and auto zones to signal that autos are welcome but are secondary to pedestrians. The underlying principle is integration of users rather than separation – that by removing barriers and intentionally creating ambiguity for motorists, the physical space can lead to greater safety and improved social connection. Paul gives a crash course in the basic principles of street design, and discuss technical and philosophical challenges in implementing shared streets in San Francisco.

Burning Man isn't what it seems to be. Today it's a massive event, with cool arts whipped by regular giant dust storms in the Black Rock desert. But 30 years ago, it was an underground event put together by renegade artists in the middle of San Francisco. Law enforcement didn't like that, so with the help of the Cacophony Society, they moved it to an unforgiving wind-swept dry lakebed in the Nevada desert. It slowly changed to become the $20+ million event it now is. This film looks at how decadence turned into organized chaos, and how politics might have replaced philosophies.
