In this clip.... From a pure efficiency standpoint: riding a bike was 834,480 % more energy efficient than driving during this traffic jam. From a fuel consumption standpoint: riding a bike was 8,346 % more fuel efficient than driving a car during this traffic jam. AND the bike gets there first! Plus... - The bicyclist doesn't have to go the gym today. - The bicyclist doesn't have to park. - The bicyclist probably is enjoying the ride more than the drivers sitting in gridlocked traffic. Anyone care to check my work? Approx 200 cars are idling in this 1 minute clip. Approx .017 gallons used per 1 minute of idling Total of 200 cars * .017 gallons/minute = 3.4 gallons of gasoline burned in the 1 minute clip (to sit still) Approx 20 cars made it through on the light at Market & 7th St light. So, for the videotaped jam to clear, 10 minutes will have to pass. 10 minutes * 3.4 gallons = 34 gallons of gas burned during those 10 minutes Distance the cars will move in 10 minutes: .2 miles People carried by the 200 cars: Generously assume 1.5 passengers per car, so 300 people. 300 people will travel .2 miles, so that is 60 people-miles traveled. Will ignore the gas consumed by the cars actually moving the short distance. 34 gallons / 60 people-miles = 0.57 gallons per person So, each person is responsible for burning .57 gallons of fuel to move .2 miles. Burning .57 gallons of fuel will release .57 gallons * (20 lbs of waste / gallon of gas) = 11.3 lbs of waste into the air. Energy stored in the .57 gallons of gas: .57 gallons * (131760000 Joules / gallon of fuel) = 75103200 Joules of energy Time required to move a bike .2 miles: 1 minute (including stopping at lights) Energy required to move a bike at 150 watts (a high estimate) for 1 minute = 150 watts * 1 minute * 60 (seconds/min) = 9,000 Joules So, from a pure efficiency standpoint, riding a bike is 75,103,200 / 9,000 * 100 = 834,480 % more energy efficient than driving during a traffic jam. There are 4185 Joules in 1 kCal of food. The cyclist will require 9000 / 4185 = 2.15 nutritional calories (or kCals) to move the bike at 150 watts for 1 minute. Producing 2.15 food calories requires approximately 2.15 * 10 = 215 kCals of gasoline (during food production and transportation). 215 kCals of fuel is 215 kCals * 4185 Joules/kCal = 899,775 Joules So, from a fuel consumption standpoint, riding a bike is 75,103,200 / 899,775 * 100 = 8,346 % more efficient than driving a car during a traffic jam.
