Nonfictions: Jeremiah Day/Simone Forti/Fred Dewey is an exhibition by three multidisciplinary artists who use dance, conversation, photography, improvisation, and performance as their medium and form. Their individual and collaborative work embodies singular interpretations of cultural and political realities—a combination of facts culled from individual experiences, media sources, and their own distinctive responses to the complexities of civic and public life. Their collaborative work is born out of separate creative processes: visual and performance art for Day, dance and poetry for Forti, and text and public space activism for Dewey. Preceding their installation at SMMoA, the trio presented two live performances in the Museum’s main gallery on May 1 and May 3. These performances included a slideshow and physical movement by Day, dance solos by Forti, and a video accompanied with selected readings by Dewey. This video is an excerpt from the trio's performances on May 1 and 3, 2014.

Bettina Hubby is a polymath when it comes to media; depending on what the idea requires, she's known to work in drawing, painting, couture, performance, collage, and catalogs. In fact, as soon becomes apparent during her conversation with Shana Nys Dambrot, there's always a book at the end of everything. With a background in various kinds of designs including fashion and rare books, her projects are often self-contained conceptually. She'll have an idea, do whatever it takes in terms of media, performance, duration, and collaboration to make it happen -- then publish a book about it and move on. Her collages (one of the only series she continues to expand indefinitely) often cannibalize fashion photography -- and increasingly co-opt its actual materials -- deconstructing and reimagining the elements of desire, appetite and aspiration at work in your brain whether you know it or not. She once planned an entire wedding in a years-long project called Get Hubbied that brought every possible creative form into question, reinterpreting traditions within the prism of contemporary art. Then she opened a store on Eagle Rock Blvd that sold nothing but Eagles and Rocks as represented in a broad swath of merch and homemade crafts from around the country. Recently, a construction site near her studio inspired her to create a sculptural installation that both utilized and transformed elements of construction, evocation, documentation and spectacle. SITE was exhibited at the University of La Verne Harris Art Gallery to such broad acclaim that Hubby has since been commissioned as the Santa Monica Museum of Art's "Construction Artist in Residence" in honor of the current state of Bergamot Station while the subway is being built at the site. Her project, Dig the Dig, is already underway. www.hubbyco.com

For this exhibition, Sone and Weissman have embarked on a particularly risky and rewarding endeavor: to build a mechanical ski lift stretching the length of the the Museum. Together they bring the rush of outdoor adventures and instinctual creative production to SMMoA, giving viewers a rare opportunity to reflect on otherwise fleeting experiences.
