(Description from Dance This 2007 Program) CU TURE premiered in PNB’s Choreographer’s Showcase in June and is a fashion archetype dance, driven by heavy rhythm and blues beat. A hard- edged, pop culture movement, referred to as “Voguing”, was created originally at the Rikers Island jail and made its way into the gay club scene in New York City. CU TURE takes voguing as a jumping off place and highlights the elements of fashion, society and isolation seen in life. (Description from Dance This 2007 Program) “Zapateo,” derived from the word shoe, is a stepping dance style in which the dancer provides rhythmic enhancement to a melodious tune. Traditionally accompanied by one guitar, two or more males would compete against each other to demonstrate skill and musicality by improvising intricate rhythmic patterns with feet against the floor and body slapping. Unlike U.S. tap, it is danced with a plain hard-soled shoe. Choreographer: Luis Sandoval Composer & Musician: Roberto Arguedas North-South ConeXions Project Director: Rose Cano Afro-Peruvian Cultural Specialist & Guest Dancer/Instructor: Monica Rojas, Ph.D (Anthropology) Dancers: Deon Abdullah, La’Twon Allen, Tyrone Crosby, Gina Bravo de Rueda, Olivia Bravo de Rueda (company manager), Nailah Harris, Siya Manyakanyaka-Kelley, Makayla McGhee, Janisha Sparks, Ahmen Taplin and Jonathan Williams 2007

The documentary piece that accompanies the Dance This 2007 DVD. It can be found as the first menu selection followed by selecting individual dance pieces and viewing the entire performance. The documentary follows the process of the dancers and choreographers. Starting with the Dance This intensive which gives an opportunity for young dancers, ages 13-22, at all levels to immerse themselves in dance over the course of 10 days. Students are exposed to a wide range of dance styles and techniques in a supportive yet challenging atmosphere. Instruction included ballet, modern, jazz, African, Afro-Latin, Hip Hop and special workshops in nutrition/wellness, careers/college, choreography, partnering and musical theatre. Then the documentary talks about the process and experiences of the Dance This performance. A performance that brings together young dancers and professional guest artists in a performance that celebrates collaboration and diversity of dance--both traditionally rooted and contemporary in form. Participants rehearse in the spring and intensely during the week of the performance, taking part in cross cultural workshops, a collaborative finale, technical rehearsals and a youth matinee and public performances. The Dance This project brings together teen performers from diverse communities and backgrounds for collaboration and to share their culture through the art of dance. In 2008, Seattle Theatre Group will be celebrating its 10th anniversary and will gather the past years performances and dancers to showcase the last 10 years of the program. 2007

This project is called More Music @ the Moore 2007. What is the Moore? Built in 1907, the Moore is Seattle's oldest performing arts theatre. Remember that Pearl Jam video (Even Flow I think) where Eddie Vedder climbs up on the lighting rig and jumps into the crowd? That's the Moore Theatre. Anyway - the organization that currently runs both the Moore and Paramount theatres, Seattle Theatre Group, puts together annual mentorship programs for young aspiring musicians and dancers. This documentary is about that experience. 2007 www.themoore.com ---------------------------------- related... from the "My Work Today" project www.vimeo.com/tag:myworktoday my first clip from "My Work Today" series www.vimeo.com/clip:150682
