Parma, 13 November Campaigners Demand Reform of EFSA Campaigners today demonstrated outside a conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), held at its headquarters in Parma, Italy. Farmers, NGOs, students and local activists have gathered to denounce the industry-capture of our food safety system that EFSA plays a key role in. Citizens and farmers gathered in the demonstration call for EFSA to be fundamentally reformed and presented demands for change in the following areas: José Manuel Benitez (COAG) said: “EFSA is not fulfilling its mandate to ensure European citizens safe food and safe farming environments. European farmers and peasants demand a radical shift in EFSA’s modus operandi.” Nina Holland (Corporate Europe Observatory) said: "Today we're standing on EFSA's doorstep in Parma to deliver our demands for radical change at the agency in order to really work for food and environmental safety. EFSA and the European Commission are celebrating EFSA's 10th year anniversary, but we think they better clean up their act and ban industry influence from food safety decisions." The conference is celebrating 10 years of “transparency, independence and scientific excellence” but the campaigners say that EFSA experts and members of its management board have frequently been shown to have a conflict of interest with the food and biotech industry. They argue that even after 10 years, EFSA has not put in place the robust rules needed to effectively ban such conflicts of interest with industry. Earlier this year the European Parliament earlier refused to approve EFSA’s budget, and the European Court of Auditors called EFSA’s independence policy ‘inadequate’. Campaigners also criticise EFSA’s reliance on industry studies and data to form its scientific advice to the EU institutions. Citizens and farmers gathered in the demonstration call for EFSA to be fundamentally reformed and presented demands for change in the following areas: 1. Prevent conflicts of interest 2. EU laws should be overhauled so that independent bodies test substances, not industry itself 3. A code of scientific practice should be established 4. Improve transparency and accountability 5. Ensure wider participation On Monday (12 November), farmers and citizens took part in a conference in Parma to discuss EFSA’s longstanding problems and to consider possible alternative approaches.

The 5th episode from UK filmmaking team Bloody Cuts is a dark bedtime story; a gothic tale of a girl scared to suck her thumb - lest the monstrous Suckablood should come! Written and directed by Ben Tillett and Jake Cuddihy, and Produced by series creator Ben Franklin, the film is a twist on classic moralistic tales from the likes of the Brother's Grimm, with a twist of old fashioned Hammer horror thrown in for good measure. The Bloody Cuts filmmaking collective bring their brand of UK horror to new levels with a film shot on location in a stately home and featuring the special make-up artistry Millennium FX. Suckablood has drawn the widest attention of any Bloody Cuts film to date, drawing praise from Film School Rejects who called it 'an absolutely fantastic horror short', and Ain't it Cool News, who referred to it as 'fan-freakin'-tastic'. The film also received favourable coverage from No Film School and /Film, amongst others, and has been named as part of the official selection for the 2012 ScreamFest Horror Film Festival. Ben is the producer and creator of the Bloody Cuts series. As a Director of Post Production by day, Ben has worked in video production for over 7 years as both and editor and colorist. But his love for filmmaking was piqued in early 2011 when he and a few filmmaker friends (and family) found some success in one of the biggest short film competitions in the world. Using that as a launch pad for Bloody Cuts alongside fellow Producer Anthony Melton, Ben has managed to assemble a collective that's since been covered by most major filmmaking websites, received sponsorship from top industry companies such as Millennium FX, and audience figures of over 200k. The team have also recently received an international film award from FilmSkillet.com and are seeing their work played at some of the biggest festivals in the world.

A dark comedy about a man who would literally die if ever he felt happiness. This modern-day fairytale is about a man called Monday who, due to a fatal allergy to serotonin, would quite literally die if ever he felt happiness. He cannot listen to music, he cannot eat cheesecake and he most certainly cannot smile. It is a lifestyle he has managed to adapt to through dour humour, social isolation and frequent trips to the cemetery, although it is here at a funeral that he meets the ever-cheerful Lola Bennett, the woman so kind and attractive that she just might be his downfall... Jack Lawrence currently studies film and television production at York University where the facilities have allowed him to make a multitude of shorts over the past few years, ranging from stern dramas about the homeless to crass comedies about the porn industry. Right now. he is working on a crime caper called "The Painter the Thief" that is to be funded through Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jack0rlando/the-painter-and-the-thief-british-drama).
