SHASTA LAKE - A close competitive game turned one-sided late in the first half here as the visiting River Valley Falcons defeated the Central Valley Falcons 48-17 in the season opener for both teams. Down 17-14, River Valley scored three touchdowns in the final three minutes or so of the second quarter, including an 80-yard run by T.J. Dove on the final play of the half, to take a 35-17 lead into the locker room. Dove finished the game with 283 yards rushing on 26 carries. He also had a 27-yard touchdown reception to give him over 300 yards total offense. Central Valley's two touchdowns both came in the first quarter. The first was on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Tim Naylor to Tony Penta. The second was on a 58-yard run up the middle by Connor Silveria. Jesus Gutierrez also kicked a 22-yard field goal for C.V. A public workshop with information about the Draft EIS and public review and comment process concerning the project to modify Shasta Dam and Shasta Reservoir was held July 16 at the Holiday Inn in Redding. Part 1 is mostly an overview of the project presented by Michelle Denning, Mid-Pacific Regional Planning Officer for the Bureau of Reclamation. Part 2 is a comments-and-questions period that was added to the workshop when many of those in attendance requested the chance to speak in a public forum. Although not an official public hearing, those from the Bureau said they would try and take down some comments and answer questions if they could. (The video is all handheld…no tripod available. DAVIS - It was a big day for three north state athletes at the 59th annual Causeway Classic played here Nov. 17, 2012. UC Davis tight end Taylor Sloat (Fall River High School 2010) caught a career-high seven passes for 109 yards and caught the winning touchdown, while teammate and running back Colton Silveria (Central Valley High School 2010) rushed for team-high 88 yards on 17 carries in the Aggies 34-27 win over the Sacramento State Hornets. Also starting for Davis is right guard Jimmy Kunkel (Central Valley High School 2009). With the win, the Aggies sent head coach Bob Biggs out on a winning note following a 30-year career at Davis. Sloat, meanwhile, capped the season off by being named as one of seven Aggies to receive Honorable Mention in the All-Big Sky Conference selections. He also was named co-Outstanding Offensive Player (along with wide receiver Anthony Soto) at the team's annual post-season banquet. SHASTA LAKE - On a rainy night here November 16, 2012, the No. 2 Central Valley Falcons saw their season come to an end with a 13-10 loss to the No. 3 West Valley Eagles in the semifinals of the Northern Section CIF Division II playoffs. SHASTA LAKE - After a rocky first half, the Central Valley Falcons, the No. 2 seed, went on to defeat the Live Oak Lions, the No. 7 seed, 40-26 here on Nov. 9, 2012, in the Northern Section CIF Division II playoffs. DEFENSE was the name of the game on Oct. 5, 2012, at West Valley High School in Cottonwood, Calif., as the Central Valley Falcons, who came into the game with a 1-4 record, stunned the previously unbeaten West Valley Eagles 31-7 in the Northern Athletic League opener for both teams. The Falcons "D" shut down the Eagles offense, while C.V.'s offense - although committing a few turnovers and penalized more than once nullifying some big gains - gained over 400 yards of total offense. They were led by Connor Silveria, who rushed for 150 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns, and Raycial Lovett, who caught two passes from quarterback Timmy Naylor for 73 yards. Naylor also intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown for the Falcons second score. Jesus Guiterrez added a 29-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.
