About the speaker: Maria Tome, Chief Engineer of the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, has been active in Hawaii's energy sector since ... well, even before Internet search engines. In spite of being a registered professional engineer, she is often invited to speak to a variety of audiences. Sometimes, she's even invited back. Abstract: Four electric utilities. Six grids. Seven types of renewable energy. Efficiency. Oil. Coal. Natural Gas. Smarter grids. Before you delve into the recently-submitted Power Supply Improvement Plans or Distributed Generation Interconnection Plans, get a quick history of energy in Hawaii - and participate in a discussion of what makes Hawaii's electricity sector unique, interesting, and important, not only to Hawaii but to the world.

Here's a video I edited for TIME magazine and Maul Media in coordination with an article written by Randy W. Stearns, "Tracking Carbon Footprints and Saving Money: The Pecan Street Project". There's a test community in Austin, Texas where residents equip their home with solar panels and Pecan Street's "smart home" technology. Participants are able to track the energy their solar panels produce vs. the energy their homes use on an appliance-to-appliance level. The result is something like a game where people are making changes to save the planet and put money back in their pockets. from HCL Technologies / Added

Find out more at www.hcltech.com The new Avatar of Power Grid.HCL has made big leaps in Smart Grid domain in last one year. We have made significant investments in terms of R&D initiatives with world leading academic groups, collaborating with industry leaders for creation of future age Smart Grid solution. HCL also studied other initiatives being undertaken worldwide. It was realized that lot of pilot projects were being initiated but without proper collaboration amongst participating stakeholders/vendors, interoperability challenges were derailing lot of plans and not was being gained. This led to the conceptualization of a Smart Grid Lab. HCL envisioned the Smart Grid Lab as a replica of a Power Grid. With its ecosystem partners, HCL has setup varioius devices like Smart meters, Home Area Network appliances and related solutions in the lab. This provides opportunities for evaluating new concepts, business cases, solutions, products before rolling them into the field. Lab also helps in determining best fit combination of devices/solutions for a specific problem statement. Lab also helps HCL engineers in discovering new problems/puzzles which needs to be addressed.
