Raquel Redshirt lives within the Navajo Nation of New Mexico. Historically, there has been a lack of access to cooking fuels due to their remote location. In order to try and solve that problem, Raquel studied solar ovens and created her own from found materials around her community. She, in turn, was a finalist at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. This is the story of how her innovative idea was born.

SPORACTION is 1 of 3 sustainability projects with indigenous communities that The 2013 Earth Odyssey Caravan completed all around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. After 2 months on the road through Mexico and Guatemala, Project Nuevo Mundo`s Earth Odyssey in collaboration with JUSTA and 22 permaculture specialists landed for 2 months in Guatemala to break off into 3 teams and complete 3 projects. SPORACTION: Team Leads: Brennan Bird, Chay Tanya, Juliana Mandell and Matt Zammit An industrial sized solar dehydrator and solar oven were custom built at Konojel Nutrition Center, a place that feeds 80 free meals a day to malnourished Guatemalan families. Along with the installation of appropriate technology, the amazing team assisted the center with coming up with a business plan for "Solar Granola" and dried fruit to help keep the project growing. "A machine is only as good as it`s manual" the team says, so they designed a manual the two new sustainable kitchen appliances as well! We must strive to remake our culture from one that is temporary and based upon a ethos of planned obsolescence to a culture that is more permanent, rewarding the idea of sustainability. We had a seed exchange at John and Libbie's home. They shared with us their tools they use to accomplish household chores such as cooking and cleaning clothes. John installed his own solar panel and their combined electric bill is around $8 a month. Check out www.codegreencommunity.org

The U.S. Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand, belatedly celebrated Earth Day with Room 8 at Thorndon School on 28 April, 2010. Earth Day is in its 40th year and is marked on 22 April each year. It began in 1970 as a day to generate awareness and action for the environment and today remains an important day in the American calendar. We (4 staff from the U.S. Embassy) spent 90 minutes with Room 8 talking about the small things we can do for the environment, about the wonderful efforts of Room 8 to recycle, compost and be environmentally friendly. We got up close and personal with a solar oven which has cooked rice, pumpkin and other delicious things – truly impressive. Other highlights included planting herbs (coriander, rosemary, oregano) and broccoli in the class garden, and a close encounter with millions of worms. The students each recited their pledges to the environment – everything from looking after the class garden, to picking up litter. We’re really impressed with Room 8 and would like to thank them for having us to visit. We had a ball.
