      • Rain From Frozen Trees

from Ronald Gilbert Baker / Added

I'm sure this has happened before but I've never experienced it. After a night of freezing sleet & rain, the temperature the next morning was about 36 degrees. When the sun appeared through the clouds the solar heat immediately started melting the ice on all of the trees to the point it looked like it was raining. When the sun disappeared behind the clouds, the melting slowed to a trickle. It was really weird.

The movie is a short presentation of a UNDP project in Dushanbe and Jilikul in Tajikistan. It's a pilot and part of a bigger project of the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub, UNDP Tajikistan and UNDP Croatia. The idea is to establish the project "East 2 East - Sustainable Energy Solutions". This is just the start of it. Today in Tajikistan, water is heated with firewood, which both takes time and contributes to the deforestation that is wreaking havoc on the country (70% of the trees are gone). According the fact that around one million men work abroad (largely in Russia), the pilot project was designed to focus on the women who remain behind. First there was a training for trainers in the capital Dushanbe, in which 12 people from private companies and the university were shown how to produce a simple solar thermal system. Later, 15 women have joined the workshop in the village of Jilikul (next to the Afghan border) to build their own solar hot water system and take them home for use. There was material left and the production of the systems is still ongoing in the community of Jilikul, which makes the project sustainable and eligible for further development. Thanks to all that participated in the project. Thanks to the lovely people of Jilikul. More about the project will be shown parallel to its development at: http://europeandcis.undp.org Music and video produced and edited by Seiden Suppe (Marko Capek): https://soundcloud.com/mcapek

VitaLight This project was about designing a product that provided electricity, for Shelterbox - a disaster relief company. I decided to work around lighting, and solar technology to power my product. Safety is a major concern for children and women in developing countries or places where there has been a natural disaster, therefore lighting provides a sense of security. The light can also be used by children when doing their homework in the evening, or around the house when there isn't any natural light. I researched into flexible solar technology and thought of a way to include packaging in my design. The solar panel with a battery socket and a battery in its casing comes in the lantern. The user takes the solar panel out with the battery in the socket ready to be charged, and places it where there is the most sun exposure. When the battery is fully charged, the user can take it out of its socket and place it in the lantern to power the light. The lantern can also be placed upside down on a flat surface.

                      What are Tags?

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
