Kathy Hinde’s music merges machinery and natural stimuli to create stunning sound and visual aesthetics. Her music and visual art grows from a partnership between nature and technology. Her sculptural sound installation, Tipping Point, invites us to consider our relationship with water, and the necessity of balancing how we use the world’s water resources. Tipping Point explores the sonic complexities and possibilities of combining glass vessels with shifting water levels. Sound tones are produced live via a microphone that feeds back inside each glass vessel. As the water levels change, the feedback is tuned to different pitches based on the resonant frequency of the remaining space in each glass vessel. The work forms both a sound sculpture and the basis of a live performance. A Cryptic commission for Sonica, Tipping Point is a collaboration with John Rowden at the Scientific Glass Workshop in the School of Physics at the University of Bristol with software designed by Matthew Olden.

Dark Star is an interactive multimedia installation which I produced during my six week residency at Mota in Ljubljana. The projection screen is actually a dark plexi-glass hemisphere suspended in mid-air using nylon chord. Onlookers interact with the installation by pointing at a particular star which then grows and reveals its own individual characteristic. Eventually there will be hundreds of different stars each with their own sound and graphics but currently there are only five which can be seen here. The project uses SuperCollider, OpenFrameworks and a Kinect for the tracking.

International Premier 10/Nov/12 Sonica: Sonic art for the visually minded 2012 in CCA Glasgow 23/Mar/13 Let's Dance Exhibition at MacRobert Art Centre Stirling 21/Oct/13 DANCE LIVE - Dance Film Showcase at Belmont Picturehouse 17/Jul/14 VIII São Carlos Videodance Festival A digital dance & sound collaboration between Jung In Jung, Skye Reynolds, Tamsyn Russell and filmmaker Chih Peng Lucas Kao. This piece has been performed at NEON Digital Art Festival 2011, Dundee; and InSpace 2012, Edinburgh. Influenced by opposition, 'Oblique Theorem' blurs the boundaries between mechanical and digital, geometric and non-geometric, exploring 'the 'choreography of sound.' Inspired by 'steampunk', the composition begins scratching, stretching, pulling and progresses into tension with sustained and harmonious notes which blur the brutal mechanical with musical tones. The sound design corresponds with an improvised physical score during which the dancers animate and sculpt the sound by manipulating the wires on the hacked game controllers (Gametrak) which are interconnected and fixed on the floor in a triangle formation. Data relating to position and length of the wires is programmed into MAX MSP. The film is edited to further blur and push the boundaries of movement and time, creating a dynamic, dream-like narrative where the dancers are trapped and seduced by wires and sound. Artists’ Biography: Jung In Jung is a sound artist / designer from South Korea who has been primarily Scottish-based in recent years. DarkStar is an interactive monument for the contemporary city and citizen. Instead of celebrating an important historical landmark or a person, it is devoted to the universe and the passing of time. A large sphere, raised above the heads of its viewers with constellations of stars gently floating across its surface, the monument is best seen at night when its sonic and visual states change constantly in real-time response to its onlookers.
