Short reconstruction of one of the four finalists for the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain awards - Emergency Services category (Sponsored by ITV Daybreak) Aired on ITV 30/9/2013 (c) ITV Shot on XF305 25P, edited on Composer. Background: PARAMEDICS DAVE RADCLIFFE, JAMES APPS, TRACEY ASHFORD AND GARY BALDERSTON When called to the stabbing of a young man, a team of paramedics were forced to restrain the attacker who had become out of control. Gilbert North, 18, stabbed his friend Jack Duke, 19, after drinking 10 cans of lager and smoking cannabis at a house party in Bethersden, Kent, last year. North became aggressive at the party, causing his friend to punch him and send him outside before going back to apologise some time later. It was at this point North pulled out a knife and stabbed his friend in the neck. Dave and James were first on the scene and began treating Jack. Shortly after they noticed North was still there watching what was going on. North was becoming increasingly agitated and had to be warned to stand back. When Gary and Tracey arrived to help their colleagues, Dave and Gary walked up to the attacker to try and calm him down and keep him away from injured Jack. Dave said: “He was getting more and more aggressive and we were worried that he may do something silly, so we attempted to calm the situation down. However it was clear that the young man wasn’t listening and we were forced to take action.” The two paramedics forced North to the ground and tied a belt around his wrists to stop him lashing out. When he was subdued Gary returned to the patient while Dave kept watch over his attacker. Police arrived and arrested North - who was jailed for four years. Jack was discharged from hospital after four days and the team of paramedics were given a commendation in the South East Coast Ambulance Service awards.
