A Note from Noah's Mom "Coming to Shining Hope Farms to ride Cappy and to visit the wonderful staff is the highlight of Noah's week. Noah was barely able to sit up on his own when he first came to the farm for Hippotherapy. Today, because of Hippotherapy, his muscles are significantly stronger and he is cruising and learning how to walk on his own. Peace surrounds our family as soon as we enter the farm. We are so grateful to have such a remarkable place for Noah to come to. He tells everyone he meets about the farm and Cappy. Noah would not be where he is or who he is today without the people and horses of Shining Hope Farms!"

        • Minority Children May Miss Autism Diagnosis

Crossing the cultural divide. Experts believe it may be at the heart of why minority children are diagnosed with autism later than other kids. “There is a delayed diagnosis, the children are older when they make that diagnosis in a lot of minority groups. And we don’t know why that is, maybe it’s an access to care issue, maybe it’s a cultural issue,” says Sherri Campbell, who is a nurse practitioner with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. Autism involves a wide range of intellectual, social and language issues. While the number of children diagnosed is rising, minorities aren’t climbing at the rate of their white peers. Researchers believe it’s likely related to differing levels of awareness. The drawback to disparity is that valuable services for autism, including early intervention, may not be equally distributed to children from all backgrounds. “It’s so important because we can get in with the services - speech therapy, behavioral therapy - to help the child reach higher potential. We really feel like early intervention and early identification is the key to have having a better outcome,” says Campbell. Lee Memorial Health System’s Golisano Children’s Hospital hopes to beat the odds, casting a wide net in the community as part of its free monthly autism screenings. “We try to have materials available for people from different cultures and different languages, and we do hope that all families in the area will come,” says Campbell. Breaking down barriers to care gives every child the chance to succeed. In February, our Birthday Heroes, Sheri, Ollie, Heather and Jennie, raised over $2400 to help train teachers on how to include children with communication and swallowing disorders in their classes. Children who previously couldn't go to school will be able to attend class for the first time, which is definitely worth celebrating with some cake. Interested in pledging your birthday? Shining Hope Farms is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2002 whose mission is to enable children and adults with disabilities to achieve functional goals through the use of equine assisted activities and Hippotherapy. They operate two locations with one in Charlotte and one in Mount Holly. Their main programs include therapeutic horseback riding, Hippotherapy, and Special Olympics. The programs are structured to best serve individuals with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down’s Syndrome, Developmental Disabilities, Brain Injuries, Hypotomia, and a large array of other disabilities. Historically 85% of their patients make functional gains (including, gaining head-control, trunk control, normal speech patterns, and even the ability to walk) during their time in therapy which helps to transform their quality of life (and their family’s quality of life). Approximately 40% of the 150 participants the farm sees each week are below 200% of the poverty line, a population that benefits immensely from the affordability of their services, as the majority of the patients come at no-cost to the family. SHF is gold level participant with GuideStar, a leading symbol of transparency and accountability. www.shininghopefarms.org
