Summary: The quiet Dutch community of Sleepy Hollow lay in the Adirondack mountains on the western shore of the mighty Hudson River in America's colonial period. The solitude of the woods was breathtaking, and not even a schoolmaster was immune from the eerie miasma which everyone knew permeated the dense forest. Written in 1820, Washington Irving's The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow has become a classic of American literature, and has been retold in many different ways. Here is the original, from Irving's own hand. Sometimes the easiest questions are the hardest to answer. „Why Design?“ was the question asked by departure and the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. Addressed were four very special speakers from the design world invited to this year’s talk series at the Vienna k/hauskino. Stefan Sagmeister, Gijs Bakker, Inga Sempé and Konstantin Grcic each answered the question differently, a question everyone who has ever decided to work within design should not stop asking. A) "Why not!" B) "Because it´s a job." C) "Because design matters." Konstantin Grcic (b. Munich, 1965) trained to be a cabinet maker at Parnham College, England, later studying industrial design at the Royal College of Art, London. He founded his studio, Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID), in 1991. He has made a name for himself in various areas as a versatile designer – furniture, industrial, and exhibition design and architectural projects. KGID works with leading companies in the international design industry. Many of Grcic’s products have been awarded international design awards and are on show in the foremost museums in the world. In 2005, Phaidon Press in London published a comprehensive monograph of his oeuvre. Konstantin Grcic defines function in human terms, combining aesthetic strictness with great mental acuity. All his work is characterised by careful research into the history of design and architecture and his love of technology and materials. Known for his pared-down pieces, Grcic has often been labelled a minimalist, but the designer himself prefers to speak of ‘simplicity’. konstantin-grcic.com
