Go behind the scenes on a collaborative photoshoot with photographer Kelsey Beacco of Kel-Z Photography and professional photographer and cinematographer, Ben Sant of BTS Photography. This shoot's concept is based around high fashion with a Macabre twist. We head to an abandoned set of homes and industrial buildings to shoot 3 models with natural light and flashes in a dedicated strobist approach to off camera lighting. Visualize the techniques and listen to the commentary on how to light with speedlights.

This is probably the most boring subject matter you could possibly photograph. Screws. Yup, simple, idle, hardware. But, figuring out how to light it.....now that's where the fun comes in. I hope you might be able to learn a bit from this video. There was a lot of trial and error for me (as in anything that worth learning) but in the end, I'm happy with the result. I apologize for the terrible video quality, especially toward the end. It was quite dark by the time I was done filming.

This is the behind the scenes video of the latest car & model feature to be published in Perth Street Car Magazine. Featured is Vince Belladonna’s Holden Torana Top Doorslammer Drag Car with Miss Motorvation 2010; Samantha. Both of the shoots you see in this video, where I didn’t use natural light I used only speedlights. I also didn’t use any triggers I relied on the built in master/slave functionality of the canon speedlights. This was a test to see how they would hold up and they did suprisingly well. The only tricky part is you just need that line of sight to the flashes which posed a couple of problems here and there, but for the most part they held up pretty well for a critical shoot like this. I have done some other tests with the speedlights using up to 6 of them, and that info will be hitting the blog very soon. I would still highly recommend using wireless radio triggers for doing any shoots so you have that reliability and flexibility. Pocket wizards are great as we all know, but I’m currently testing the Yongnuo RF-602’s and they haven’t skipped a beat yet. More on those soon as well. NOTE: When shooting the model, my flash on the camera is firing, but it is only triggering the other flashes. It is set to off, so it is not contributing to the scene! My main light is the the white shoot-through umbrella.
