1. Great is your faith

Father Rick Nagel’s homily from Sunday August 17, 2014. Fr Nagel looks at the scripture of the Canaanite woman asking Jesus to heal her daughter from a demon. His first response is indifference or silence to her. His second response is that of rejection. His third response is an insult to the woman. After the women’s response the third time Jesus responds to her with “Great is your faith, let it be done to you as you wish.” This a call for each of us- to be steadfast with deep and abiding faith in God and His plans for our life. We are called to be persistent and to not give up even if the answer isn't right now or in the way we would like it to be. We must trust in God’s timing and His plans for us.

These are photos of one of Israel's most visited areas. Masada is about 21/2 miles from the Dead Sea in the wilderness of Judah. It is an immense brown crag approximately a mile long and 220 yards wide. Herod the Great built a great fortification out of the huge plateau. It was designed to withstand any siege. When Jerusalem fell in 70 AD, a band of Jewish patriots made their way to Masada and successfully withstood the Romans for three years. Their leader was Eliezer Ben Yair, who challenged the group of zealots to die by their own hand rather than be captured. 960 men, women and children perished. Masada has become a shrine and a symbol to the new nation of Israel. It is one of my favorite places to spend time when I am in my Father's land. It is hard to comprehend that what I am seeing was built 2000 years ago. I pray you will enjoy.

In the two parts of this New Testament text James stands aside to denounce the godless wealthy, who by their lack of attention to matters of equity and justice have caused so much hardship for many of James’ readers. Second, James comforts and encourages those who are in the midst of this suffering.

This video is intended to help people in our congregation dig a little deeper this week with their small group of friends or family, following our experience together in worship this past Sunday. Each weekend we publish an Intro, a Sermon and a Discussion Starter. This sermon series called “Steadfast” invites us to hear the words of Jesus’ brother James, as he invites us to be those who test our faith such that it is tempered into something unshakable. This video will help prompt discussion related to our sermon “Steadfast: Wealth, Power & Justice" (James 5:13-20) from Sunday June 29, 2014, which can be found on our website link below. I hope this helps you learn and grow in your relationship with God and in your understanding of His word.
