In 2010 The San Francisco Bay Area Darfur Coalition commissioned this video. The theme of the campaign to raise awareness about Darfur has been expressed globally through "Beat for Peace." The same basic beat has been adopted by countless countries, tribes, and cultures then performed by local musicians. The SFBADC partnered with local drummers to create this informational piece. The video features the Sudanese Lost Boys who live in the Bay Area. They tell their stories and call for the world to partner with them in bringing peace to their homeland. Ali and Chol met serendipitously and set off on a journey to become father and son, their Sudanese identities are brought into question as the Sudan transitions into a nation with new borders. This story is one of many that make up the collaborative online film project The Two Sudans. I began filming on the eve of the referendum and continued while the country moved rapidly towards the division of Sudan into two separate nations. For more on the project visit www.thetwosudans.com (This film was made with the express consent of the family portrayed in it).
