In recent years the Sunshine Coast has had a lot of publicity from high profile Queensland Police Service (QPS) matters, such as the crackdown on bikie gang networks and the investigation into the abduction and murder of Daniel Morcombe. These types of events bring communities together and generally see them investing their trust into their local police to protect them in a just and fair way. But do these events also carry the consequence of an increased level of police presence? Is the amount of officers out in force really necessary? What are the attitudes of locals and experts to the police presence in the Sunshine Coast region? Do the actions and attitudes of police at the Coast reflect a bigger issue about police power and control? Through a thorough investigation of varying viewpoints and angles, this story will reveal some interesting answers to these questions.

My leap was in memory of Neil Falkner (1969-2002), son of my friend Judy Lynne. Neil had his life changed in his teens through an adventure with Outward Bound, which teaches people resiliency, compassion, leadership and connections through shared experience in the wilderness. This fundraiser specifically benefits at-risk youth, but Outward Bound participants range in age from 15 to 90. Through the Neil Falkner Legacy project, Judy Lynne and Neil's family and friends have put an astounding 21 youth through the Outward Bound program since 2002. I was delighted to play my tiny part. Next year... it's my wife's turn! If you would like to donate towards Sunshine Coast youth attending this incredible program, there is an annual benefit in Roberts Creek every year - this year it's on the 18th in the Creek Hall, and you can check it out - and the silent auction - at neilfalknerlegacy.ca. See you there!
