Los Angeles based, Pacific System Ready Cut Homes began in 1908, and by 1939 it was the largest builder of homes in the world. During the depression, the company founder's son, Meyers Butte came on board. He convinced the family that manufacturing surfboards would be a good way to diversify the company's business. The Swastika name and symbol were chosen for their "connotations of health and good fortune." PSH was the first company to mass-produce surfboards. Earliest archaeological evidence of the swastika symbol dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization of Ancient India as well as Classical Antiquity. The symbol remains widely used in Eastern religions, specifically in Hinduism and Buddhism, and was also used by various Native American tribes. Flippy's always been on the leading edge and still is. He wanted to ride all the outside breaks on the North Shore. They were already exploring Kaena Point by boat. They had ridden there, not 50-footers, but they were paddling into some pretty big ones. Flippy wanted a "big" board for the outside breaks. Typical of Flippy, who could have bought Clark Foam, he scrounged a couple of old shitty 12-foot blanks from Grubby, cut the noses off, and then glued the blanks together. It looked like an hourglass, 20-feet long when I got it, with two 3/4" redwoods down the center. I almost had to have help to turn it over. Jeff Johnson let us use his backyard at Ehukai (right). I outlined this thing and was shaping it under the trees. First, I would have glaring sun, and then the palm branches would mottle the light. It wasn't easy under those conditions. I had plenty of North Shore kibitzers throwing in their two cents worth. Fly and I named it the "Awoooo" board for the feeling you'd have as you dropped in. Classic Flippy, he had us laminate one of his business cards under the glass with "$3 reward for the return for this board" written on it. Of course, it was worth a bit more than that.
