The minor Physical Computing is a part of the 3rd year Interaction Design course at the ArtEZ Institute of Arts. We were commissioned to create a 'living object orchestra' which was to be exhibited at the Dutch Design Week 2014 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Leading up to the DDW, we studied the concept of movement (week 1), transformation(week 2) and behaviour (week 3). This video portrays the concept of behaviour. I have always been fascinated by the swarm behaviour of birds and the choreography of their black silhouettes against the sky. The balloons in the video represent this intuitive movements of birds on a group.

A few shots from our recent experience of the Starling Murmaration in Brighton. Nobody really knows why Starlings do this. Some say it's for protection. Others say it's to communicate to other starlings that their roost is nearby. What do you think? * This project was featured in the publication: Design Document #27: Networks and Environments (2008), by Damdi Publishing Co. (http://damdi.co.kr/dd27.html) ** If you're interested in my other works, or want to know more about me, please go here: www.robert-chen.com This is an animated presentation of my architecture thesis project at Cornell University, called "Game Scape" (2008). The project envisions an office space of the future, where space is limited, pace of change is faster, yet technology is also more advanced and affordable. Taking cues and inspirations from dynamic landscapes found in digital games, emerging technology trends, innovative space usage, and swarm intelligence found in nature, I designed a modular system composed of 2 types of modules: ceiling and floor units, where each of them can be reconfigured to different shapes and materials. Combining many of these modules together, you start to get a landscape with dynamic topology, zones, and configurations that can transform a single office space into multiple dynamic forms and programs.

The blocks each desire to build forward...making a cantilever to cross a gap. We constantly monitor the structure’s forces at all connections so it never becomes unstable during the build sequence. Software: Rhino, Grasshopper, Millipede, and in-house script

In 2011 I started to develop a new piece of work called Swarm. The concept is picked from nature, most known as a huge flocks of insects. This is the inspiration behind the project Swarm, which consist of thousands flat aluminium airplanes hung in a swarm formation on a large wall. The project show how humans have conquered aerial space. How we constantly move around in the world like swarms; both as human swarms swell as airplane swarms. A result of modern aerial traffic. As a part of the installation the audience has been able to take with them airplanes directly from the wall. That is, they can choose an airplane and pick it directly from the installation. Hence the airplanes, and the swarm, have spread out to the general public, and the project has, and continues to have, its own life outside the gallery space.

A thrill that will never dispair. Watching snowbirds take off on their farewell flight until warmer days return. Yearning to be free and roam throughout the world, catching the sun for warmth, comfort, and survival, only to embark another new journey. This exhibition is inspired by the dance and patterns that emerge during the migration of birds on their relentless flights searching for food and survival around the world. The installation is comprised of hundreds of small wool hand-felted spheres, recreating an aerial bird swarm display. Just like birds flying together in large groups, some take the lead to let those rest whose wings are tired, reminding me how important it is to be thankful for all of those who have been with us through our continuous personal flights striving for survival, taking the lead while we recover our strength. The journey is long and harsh, but together in flight they know they can make it. We could fly alone but would not get as far as we could with the help of others. Each sphere within this display has been carefully crafted with all local wool from upstate New York, and hand dyed with local, homegrown plants. Each color represents the natural hues of the northland harvest season. By: Amanda Hippert

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
