      A 5 x 5 Chimeras event Theodore Brown Benjamin Farnsworth Molly Hunker Jonathan Louie Kyle Miller Anne Munly David Shanks Discussion will draw upon some of the themes explored in the recent faculty works exhibition ‘5x5 Chimeras’, currently on display in Slocum Hall’s Marble Room. The first wave of exhibition participants created an initial set of five images by offering fresh readings of Syracuse poet Hayden Carruth’s poem The Wreck of the Circus Train. Subsequent waves of participants adopted a previously produced image (or series of images) as a point of departure for their own efforts at translation. Making use of the lively PechaKucha format, the panel hopes to address a selection of the sorts of architectural game capable of being uncovered in a range of contemporary architectural practices, with a view to unpacking a little of the discourse around the real, the authentic, and the playful.

                  Bjarke Ingels started BIG Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Through a series of award-winning design projects and buildings, Bjarke has developed a reputation for designing buildings that are as programmatically and technically innovative as they are cost and resource conscious. Bjarke has received numerous awards and honors, including the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize in 2011, the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2004, and the ULI Award for Excellence in 2009. In 2011, the Wall Street Journal awarded Bjarke the Architectural Innovator of the Year Award. In 2012, the American Institute of Architects granted the 8 House its Honor Award, calling it “a complex and exemplary project of a new typology.” Alongside his architectural practice, Bjarke taught at Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University, and Rice University and is an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen. He is a frequent public speaker and has spoken in venues such as TED, WIRED, AMCHAM, 10 Downing Street, and the World Economic Forum.

                      Architecture Spring 2015 Lecture Series - April 2, 2015 at Slocum Hall. Gena Wirth is a designer, urban planner, and horticulturalist practicing at SCAPE Landscape Architecture in New York City, where she pulls from her interdisciplinary training to create ecologically rich and culturally relevant landscapes from the infrastructural scale to the site level. As an associate at SCAPE she leads projects that bridge research and practice, including the Columbia University Medical and Graduate Education Building Landscape, Town Branch Commons in Lexington, KY, Academy, Petrochemical America(Aperture Foundation, 2012), and the Museum of Modern Art exhibition Oyster-tecture. Further, Gena is an integral part of the project team which is working with the EDC to find sustainable solutions to help prevent the next super storm from damaging New York. She has taught interdisciplinary landscape studios at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and Rutgers University. Gena Wirth is a spring 2015 Richard Gluckman Visiting Critic at Syracuse Architecture
