Balancing and leveling the Steadicam "Merlin" can be a very time consuming task. If you balance it bottom heavy, you just need a few seconds to level the thingy, but you´ll also get fed up with the permanently tumbling. Balancing it as perfect as possible needs a lot of patience and therefore either strong arms or some little helpers. I had a great idea to connect my merlin to a Seagull shouldermount, which is super easy and effective as hell:) Hope you like my tiny tutorial and maybe it´s also helpful for you :) Equipment used: Canon EOS 7D, Tokina AF 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX, Kenko Polarizer, Steadicam "Merlin", Seagull Shoulderrig, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38, B+W MRC Polarizer, slim, Canon EF 50mm/ f/1,4, USM B+W MRC Polarizer, slim, Manfrotto MA 055 CXPRO3 tripod, Manfrotto 701 HDV videohead, Manfrotto 808 RC4 3way-head, Zoom H2 external Audiorecorder © 2010 The IE·DNlab Project

    • Steadicam Merlin - First Attempts

I read so much about the Steadicam "Merlin", and after comparing it to other systems on the market, I decided to buy this nifty little pro-gadget, which is so pretty lightweight and makes so much fun. Here are my very first attempts to get a flying camera. Unfortunately my 7D is still at the service (broken body;), so I put the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ38 on it. It´s essential to balance it perfectly (which is done in a couple of minutes). Once adjusted and leveled you just need a calm hand and a good tactics to lead the Merlin its way. It´s really remarkable, how calm and stable the Merlin was, while driving our old Mini Cooper. The Mini is hard, rough and it´s making noises all the way. It jumps over the street like a bouncy ball, but the Merlin rocked it! Obviously I need much more training on this, as it´s still a lot tumbling, but time will bring the desired skills:) (The lighter the camera, the harder it get´s, to move the little sorcerer) Love this thingy :)

This short feature is about the industrial gears of SEW Eurodrive and is supposed to show the fast transformation capabilities of their gears in a different way. The "IG gears" aka "Transformers" won the IF communication design award 2009 in the category "animation" and the intermedia-globe GOLD and GRAND Award 2010 by World Media Festival. I was Lead Animator on this project and animated 4 (of 5) transformations (building, truck, bucket-wheel excavator and earth-ball) as well as the cameras. I also did the pre-lighting, texturing/shading and editing. credits: Madness GmbH (producer) Sonja Schlichter (project management) Thorsten Kuttig (Lead Animator, editing etc) © 2009 SEW Eurodrive GmbH, Madness GmbH watch out http://www.virtual-characters.de for more of my animations and 3D work!

"Elegant design betrays the strength of the new CLK 63 AMG Black Series - the latest in AMG´s exclusive Black Series of high performance concept cars. With a design leveraging that of the official Safety Car of Formula 1 racing, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series is powerful enough to establish top performance around top tracks in the world, but legal for the streets - with the ability to complete the most important journey: from the track into your garage." (source: Mercedes-AMG) I worked on that special as lead animator and therefore I animated the camera and the car for more than 100 shots. credits: Mackevision GmbH (Producer) Several artists @ Mackevsion Thorsten Kuttig (Lead Animator) Sonja Schlichter (Project Management)

I just got my motorized pan head and tested it at first with my tiny Kodak Zi6 HD-camera. To also simulate the overall weight it has to carry, I mounted my Canon EOS 20D to it and on top the Kodak. As it is supposed to carry my new Canon EOS 7D and a hi quality mic, I don´t care about the noise, the motor makes sometimes. I think, for that few bucks it´s a very good choice to get nice pans´n´tilts. © 2010 The IE·DNlab Project
