A short documentary film, on human-elephant conflict prevalent in the state of Karnataka, was released by the Former Chief Justice of India Mr. M N Venkatachaliah at his residence on Thursday, July 23, 2015. The documentary, titled “Elephant, Men battle it out”, shows how the disturbance and plundering of the elephants’ habitat has forced them to get into conflict with humans. It also highlights how a vast uninterrupted forest stretching from Karnataka across Tamil Nadu and Kerala once served as a migratory corridor for elephants, and over the years how human incursions into this area, have affected this traditional elephant territory. The documentary is produced under the banner Regret Iyer Productions (RIP), a non-commercial educative documentary filmmakers team headed by veteran journalist Regret Iyer of Bengaluru. The documentary is written, filmed and edited by Shravan Regret Iyer (Masters in Media and Communication Studies student at Christ University) along with the support of many youngsters from Kodagu and its surrounding villages. The documentary lasts for ten minutes and contains many human-elephant conflict visuals shot only using cell phone camera. It also contains many rare images of the Khedda operation, especially the “river drive” in the year 1972, where capturing the wild elephants attracted many foreign tourists. Former Chief Justice of India Mr. M N Venkatachaliah after releasing the documentary said, “The documentary which I was shown has a deep message to all of us. The man-animal conflict is an expression of the consequences of our civilizational progress. It is also an expression of a developmental model, which was aptly characterized as ruthless, rootless, jobless, futureless and growthless. The metaphor is clear...the message is clear...humanity can survive only if it ceases to treat nature as an antagonist and adopt an attitude of living in tune with nature. Justice S R Venkatesh Murthy (Former Judge of Karnataka High court) along with producer Regret Iyer, director Shravan Regret Iyer, assistant director Vinay S, were present during the documentary release.
