Bushings are the small circular pieces of urethane that surround the kingpin and act as cushions to support the wide range of twisting and turning skate trucks are subjected to. There are two bushings per truck, one above the hanger and one below. These are most commonly referred to as the boardside and roadside bushings. The boardside and roadside bushings both provide suspension, hold the hanger in place and control turning. The boardside bushing takes more of the weight of the rider, while the roadside bushing has a great effect on rebound, lean, and turn. Bushing selection has a huge impact on the way your trucks will ride and feel. Because of this we ensured that the Atlas truck is compatible with most aftermarket bushings. Atlas Trucks are supplied stock with 89a barrel Atlas bushings which features our proprietary high-rebound urethane formula that excels in many types of riding. If you choose to order directly on the Atlas website you’ll also be able to choose from a full range of Venom bushings. As a general rule of thumb we suggest you run slightly higher durometer bushings in Atlas than you usually might with your current trucks. Cones: Conical shaped bushings offer the least resistance and stability. Cones are great for increasing turn or the “carviness” of your set up. Run two cones paired for an extremely carvy setup or try cone-barrel for a setup with great lean and moderate stability. Barrels: Barrels are the most universal bushing shape. They offer a good balance of stability, rebound, and lean. Barrel- Barrel is a great “Do everything” setup. This is our stock Atlas bushing setup and great for everything from cruising to freeriding. Eliminator: Eliminators are great for maximum stability but reduce overall responsiveness and become more restrictive the further the rider leans. This bushing works great for downhill setups. Stepped Cones: Stepped Cones are good for freeride and downhill setups. The bottom of the bushing fills the bushing seat, eliminating slop and increasing resistance, while the wide conical top end offers stability with better response than an eliminator. There are countless bushing combinations that suit every rider weight and riding style. Buy multiple packs of bushings so you can change your trucks to suit any riding conditions. Experiment and build your Atlas your way to create the perfect setup for you!

The kingpin is the large bolt running through the center of the hanger and baseplate, connecting the two. The kingpin can be tightened or loosened against the bushings to allow for increased or decreased turning ability. This is done by adjusting the kingpin nut above the washer that also secures the kingpin in place. Shown tool adjusting nut. The washer prevents damage to the roadside bushing while also effecting the characteristics of the ride by control the of the bushing’s distortion when the hanger turns.” Close up of washer. Atlas Trucks come stock with a flat washer which doesn’t restrict the bushing and allows for increased turning ability when compared to traditional cupped bushing washers. This washer is power-coated, stainless steel and custom made to a 2.0mm thickness to achieve proper bushing compression.” o Animate text “Tapered Kingpin” o “A great truck requires a unique combination of kingpin qualities. The kingpin should be removable for maintenance and can’t have any slop between the kingpin and the bore hole in the base plate. Movement in the kingpin equals a sloppy low tech ride. Conventional truck designs either have driven kingpins or simple bolts, both of which fail to achieve the kind of performance Atlas thinks riders need and demand. In the pursuit of a removable kingpin with zero slop, Atlas had to break the mold of traditional kingpin design. Atlas Trucks have a high-strength heat treated kingpin that is custom made to taper at a 1:20 ratio to fit the tapered baseplate borehole, one of the unique Atlas patent pending design features. This ensures that as the kingpin nut is tightened the kingpin will be pulled up into the tapered bore hole to deliver a self-centering, zero tolerance precision fit. This provides secure support of the kingpin along its entire length so that the kingpin and baseplate act as one unit instead of two separate parts. As a result, you won’t feel the slop and rock of the kingpin that is present in many other trucks.

The laser engraved markings on the baseplate, and elsewhere on the truck, provide not only a precision look in line with the design of the Atlas, but some important information as well. The baseplate angle is clearly displayed and the taper ratio of the kingpin is shown near the kingpin itself. The unique serial number ensures strict quality control.

The Atlas baseplate is made of Forged A356/T6 forged aluminum. It’s designed with an extra thick mounting base and solid construction. The Atlas Baseplate uses more aluminum than conventional trucks where the center of the basepate is hollow. The baseplate is precision machined to be a close tolerance fit with both the 21mm pivot Cup and tapered kingpin. The eight-hole mounting pattern allows for a full range of wheelbase options, both new school and old school.

The pivot is the portion of the hanger which sits in the baseplates pivot cup and provides the axis which the hanger rotates around during turns. Standard RKP trucks use a rounded pin pivot. The Atlas pivot is a massive ball pivot. The size of this ball pivot allows for a 50% increase in load-bearing surface area, providing more precise control than traditional pivots offer. The Atlas Massive Ball Pivot allows the hanger to turn with a full, unrestricted range of motion and doesn’t subject the pivot to stress from interference contact with the edge of the pivot cup cavity - a common issue for many conventional truck designs. All this combines to provide a unique ride with maximum lean, consistent control, and a divey feel.

The speed rings are small metal rings that are placed on the axle to allow the bearings to spin freely. The inner speed ring is situated between the inner bearing and the aluminum hanger while the outer speed ring is placed between the outside of the outer bearing and the axle nut. Speed rings are a very small detail but Atlas offers an improvement over the standard thin speed rings by including upgraded custom-made 1.25mm thick speed rings.”

The hanger hardware includes the speed rings and axle nuts. Simply put, the axle nuts are what keep the wheels on the axle. These are typically 5/16” lock nuts that include a nylon ring insert to prevent loosening under vibrations & torque. Atlas Trucks are available with gold, silver, or black axle nuts.

The axle of a truck is the threaded metal rod that runs through the center of the hanger and attaches the wheels to the rest of the truck. Atlas has designed an 8mm to 10mm stepped axle design which has over 50% more steel in it than traditional 8mm truck axles. This stiffens the axle to provide a precise load transfer from wheels into the hanger. The 10mm core is located where the strength and stiffness is needed most - the center section of the hanger. The addition of the 10mm axle core makes this truck beefier than any alternative on the market we know of. The axle is machined down to 8mm on the ends so it fits a standard wheel bearing size. This step also conveniently eliminates the need for an inner speed ring and provides additional clearance for the wheels.”
