    • ABC 24 " The Urban Child Institute: Abstinence Education Not Enough to Prevent Teen Pregnancies" 11/17/10

from The Urban Child Institute Added 48 0 0

Compared to people who begin childbearing in their 20's, teenagers tend to be less effective parents. On average, teen parents have inaccurate and inadequate knowledge of child development and appropriate parenting techniques. Teen parents are also more likely than older parents to live in poverty; therefore, they may lack access to the resources needed to support optimal brain development in their young children. Approximately 15 percent of Shelby County births are to teen mothers. A newly passed resolution of the MCS Board of Commissioners states the Board's commitment to reducing teen pregnancy. We applaud the efforts of our school system and other community groups in rallying to address this issue, as taking these steps represent considerable progress. As a data-driven, result-oriented coalition, we suggest that MCS evaluate the current Family Life curriculum and determine whether it is consistent with proven practices nationwide. Some studies find that abstinence-only programs have no effect on teen pregnancy or sexual activity, while comprehensive programs that include information about contraception promote safe sex and reduce teen pregnancy. In order to improve the well-being of families in our community, as well as support the cognitive, social and emotional growth of our youngest citizens, it is our hope that improvements are made and resources are allocated according to the best available research.

      • The Gloucester 18 Trailer

        from Media Education Foundation Added

In 2008, eighteen high school girls from Gloucester, Massachusetts were accused of making a pact to become pregnant. The mainstream media perpetuated and sensationalized the story, with reporters flying in from as far away as Australia, the UK, and Brazil. The Gloucester 18 looks behind all the headlines and hype to tell the real stories of these girls, and in the process puts a human face on a startling statistic: that the United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the developed world. The filmmakers draw on interviews with the girls, their families, high school counselors, physicians, and media personalities to unpack what really happened, and explore the complicated emotional and practical challenges faced by teens on the brink of motherhood. An excellent resource for high school health classes, teen pregnancy prevention programs, and courses in psychology, adolescent development, public health, and education.

I was happy to work with the New Hope team to produce this emotional story about a young woman who went through a radical depression while unwed, pregnant, and separated from her child's father, before finding life-changing hope through a promise from the Word of God. It was played during a message from New Hope pastor Wayne Cordeiro during a weekend service to highlight the message of hope in desperate and dark times. We didn't have a lot of time to produce the short, but this did give me an opportunity to play with the Canon 7D, specifically shooting over-crank at 60fps. The trick with a video presentation like this (as with most) is to decide what to cut out and what to keep, as there was a whole lot more to the story. But we focused on the main theme of the video and trimmed everything else away to produce something that had impact in the context of the service's message. * * * * * * * Running Time: 5;30 Interviews shot by Tim Savage (5D Mark II) + Dean Kaneshiro (HPX170) B-roll shot by Dean Kaneshiro (Canon 7D) Edited by Dean Kaneshiro Interviews directed by Mardi Savage Produced by Tim and Mardi Savage
