      • Cloudonomics author Joe Weinman on how cloud is creating a new IT reality

        05:43

from JF van der Zwet / Added

In this video our Segment Marketing Manager for Cloud, Jelle Frank (JF) van der Zwet, talks to Joe Weinman, SVP of Cloud Services & Strategy at TelX. Weinman discusses how leveraging cloud technology will enable operational excellence, product leadership and accelerated innovation. Cloud, says Weinman, is “a powerful and compelling capability that will drive benefits to IT shops, CFOs, as well as end users and customers.” Weinman explains the benefits of cloud and the value of the pay-per-use model. “When you have a variable or unpredictable demand or you want geographic dispersion and be closer to end users, the smartest way to this is to leverage the cloud for at least part of your strategy. The cloud will not take over everything but I do believe there is always going to be an optimal hybrid and the networks that will tie together all the different facilities.” Joe Weinman is author of Cloudonomics: the business value of cloud computing. In his book, Weinman provides an in-depth analysis of the effects cloud computing technologies will inevitably have on enterprises across sectors, positioning cloud as the next step in the information revolution.

Today’s proliferation and hyper growth of cloud service providers has and should continue to benefit enterprises and end-users through better quality of services, broader choices and lower costs. Clear battle lines within the service provider market do exist however they are not as clear as they once were. One example seen is the growing number of cloud providers who have all but conceded public cloud services to the top few industry leaders by establishing partnerships and/or alliances that include direct connectivity options for their customers with work loads best suited for public clouds. Unfazed by what appears to be an insurmountable economies of scale advantages of industry leaders, some providers continue to compete based on value added services and the promise of the "one throat" approach. The maturing of open source platforms, interoperability standards and hybrid delivery models only add to the complexity of CIO/CTO’s decisions in what has become a web of cloud choices. Whether natural or man-made, nothing puts a damper on revenue generation or uptime like unplanned outages. When such events do occur and uptime is impacted even modestly, customers may eventually lose confidence in a service provider’s ability to rapidly recover and restore their data, the virtual lifeblood of their business. However, the crafting of a forward-looking, properly-tuned and regularly tested Disaster Recovery Plan — especially relevant in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy — demonstrates the value of a secondary server and storage infrastructure than can help businesses recovery quickly from outages. In fact, when DR is properly executed, your customers may never realize an outage even occurred. In this session a panel of recognized industry thought leaders discuss post-Sandy DR planning, the lessons learned, how to build out a successful strategy to mitigate downtime and how to better prepare your data center, the teams that support them & especially the expectations of clients who have entrusted their valued data to you. Every second during the trading day, millions of market data updates are transmitted from hundreds of stock exchanges around the world, aggregated, and then re-disseminated at the speed of light to traders globally. For High Frequency Traders (HFT), their entire profit engine is based upon single micro-second advantages over their competitors where technologists measure every foot of fiber optic cable in their installations and demand the latest in network technologies. But with profits from HFT down dramatically, cost-effective solutions which can provide both performance and cost-savings are in demand. Join our panel of experts as we explore the leading Financial Technology advances being used in the industry today and what’s on the horizon. The value of the cloud is often said to be either cost reduction or business agility. While this may be true, the cloud can generate additional benefits in a variety of ways, such as enhanced customer experience, greater reliability and availability, reduced time to market, and more. Moreover, the cloud ultimately can be strategic, or even existen- tial, as now-bankrupt companies that have failed to formulate effective digital business models have found. This keynote will provide a strategic, C-level framework for thinking about the cloud and IT, with clear examples from industry. Speaker: Joe Weinman, SVP of Cloud Services, Telx and Author of Cloudonomics Topic: Cloudonomics: Can the cloud be strategic?
