Start the Washington Post's 'First and 17' documentary series: http://wapo.st/149p9gJ To follow the 'First and 17: The Movie,' the documentary film based on the series (and learn how to see it): www.facebook.com/firstand17 About the seires: Da’Shawn Hand is considered the nation’s #1 football recruit and he looks the part. He’s a monstrous 6’4, 260 lb. 17-year-old defensive end from Woodbridge, Va. Hand was born to teenage parents—his father is a bricklayer and he now lives hundreds of miles from his mother, who's in Philadelphia. He's on the verge of stardom, yet he shares a bedroom with two younger brothers. For his senior year, Hand will be under a first-time head coach—himself a former college football standout at Auburn—who stresses academics and integrity above all else. His inner-circle value his education, but they will also gain much from his success on the field. There is much riding on his fortune or failure. The Washington Post has been granted exclusive access to follow Da'Shawn for a weekly series documenting his balance of football, school, family life and the strain of making a monumental decision: where to play football in college. From dozens of scholarship offers, Hand is narrowed his choice to three: Alabama, Florida, and Michigan. "First and 17" is that journey.

The annual Sankofa production at The University of Alabama honors Black History past and present. Sankofa is an Akan word that means, "We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward; so we understand why and how we came to be who we are today." The Akan (Ghanaian vernacular) word, Sankofa means "one must return to the past in order to move forward." The symbol of Sankofa is that of a bird whose head is faced in the opposite direction of its body. This is emphasising on the fact that even though the bird is advancing, it periodically makes it a point to examine/ return to it's past, since this is the only way for one to have a better future.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky probably never imagined his classic novel, Crime and Punishment, would be condensed into a music video filmed in Birmingham, Alabama. However, musical prodigy, Austin Motlow, along with English partner Paige Russell, cleverly managed to capture the essence of the great writer’s heart. Honey and ML Davis followed Motlow and Russell to eclectic spots around downtown Birmingham to acquire the perfect footage for the project. High school English assignments are usually not given much thought and effort, but these are not your ordinary students. The two co-wrote the song and Motlow played the music, laying tracks of several instruments from guitars, banjo, piano, drums and upright bass. He also produced the video with help from ML Davis. Musically and visually Motlow captured the dominant themes of the book, isolation, poverty, confinement, and ultimately love and redemption. He isn’t new to writing music. Motlow has penned the majority of tunes his band performs around Birmingham. Be sure and look for him to make a splash in the music world with his indie band in the near future.
