Former New York State Senator Serphin Maltese lost his grandmother, Catarina (38), and two aunts, Lucia (18) and Rosarea (14), in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. The Maltese family was typical of the families who lost loved ones in the fire: they were Italian immigrants who came to the US for work and settled in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Inspired by the devastating loss his family suffered at the Triangle Waste Company, Maltese worked with several police task forces targeting illegal sweatshop owners during his 20 years in the New York State Senate. Today, Maltese serves as the President of the Triangle Fire Memorial Association, which is dedicated to commemorating those who lost their lives in the fire.

This piece was my final project for my last video class. The subject of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire is one that strikes a chord with me. As a union steward in past, fighting to worker rights and assuring that management is not abusing their power is something that I dealt with frequently. This incident changed our country and sadly, many of the laws that FDR fought for in the New Deal have been modified and are in threat of being eliminated. This saddens me to no end. I hope to show an artistic slant on four people who's lives were forever changed by this event.

My Story: With one of the oldest and richest cultures in the world, China has become a global economic power. But, the journey has come with a high cost. The Cultural Revolution decimated China’s cultural legacy and left a hollow shell behind. Widespread human rights abuses continue today. Chinese cultural identity has been replaced with a fanatical quest for the dollar, and the popular images of Chinese immigration include sweatshops, nail salons and fast-food. When I immigrated to the United States from Southeast China two years ago, I went to work in a sweatshop cleaning videotape, and was trained as a “nail technician.” Now I am living in Brooklyn, graduating from high school and going to college. I hope that I can use documentary filmmaking to tell the stories of people who are overlooked by society. Synopsis: There are nearly four million Chinese-Americans in the United States, not including illegal immigrants. My film will show the abusive and exploitative labor environment of Chinese immigrants in New York City, using my own experiences as well as an undercover investigation I embarked on to give my viewers an inside look into the world of New York City sweatshops.
