This film explores playful uses for the increasingly ubiquitous ‘glowing rectangles’ that inhabit the world. We use photographic and animation techniques that were developed to draw moving 3-dimensional typography and objects with an iPad. In dark environments, we play movies on the surface of the iPad that extrude 3-d light forms as they move through the exposure. Multiple exposures with slightly different movies make up the stop-frame animation. We've collected some of the best images from the project and made a book of them you can buy: http://bit.ly/mfmbook Read more at the Dentsu London blog: http://www.dentsulondon.com/blog/2010/09/14/light-painting/ and at the BERG blog: http://berglondon.com/blog/2010/09/14/magic-ipad-light-painting/

UPDATE: Thanks for all your kind words guys! It's quite overwhelming to see this shared and retweeted all over! All sins typographic in nature have been amended, hopefully. Thanks for bearing with it the whole time. :) As always, all credit due to the amazing Ira Glass. I recently bought me the MP-E 65mm and played with it a little bit. It's a very special lens and you need a little bit of patience, but the results are breathtaking. I'm looking forward to new adventures in the macro universe.. Edit: be sure to check out... part 2: http://vimeo.com/12849638 part 3: http://vimeo.com/19764519

In April 2010 a massive oil spill began in the Gulf. The entire country was glued to the news until the well was capped, and then we forgot about it. As the year anniversary was approaching I became curious, just how much oil was that exactly? Where would it have gone? What I found was shocking. So in an effort to further our discussion on oil dependency I created this short animation to help illustrate just how dependent we truly are on oil.
