About 55 minutes before Alice Waters was scheduled to speak, I was privileged to be invited to speak with her on behalf of the Foodbank of Santa Barbara, on whose board I serve and whose mission of solving hunger thru better nutrition I believe in and admire. This talk was part of the Alumni Week at UCSB. Alice had just finished giving a 45 minute talk on why children are the future of food, without referencing adults or their (home) needs or directions: it was a strongly political, inspiring speech. There was very little discussion of food, recipes, her previous work, Chez Panisse, healthy recipes or cooking. My role was to allow her to speak more directly to some of the accomplishments her Foundation has achieved: she is a model and indefatigable, and it was a privilege to be part.

AVAILABLE FOR A LIMITED TIME! Film and Interview will be taken down soon to allow the filmmakers to pursue additional festival and other screening opportunities. "The Dissolution" is a film written by Katherine Waskul and directed by Brent Rumble who collaborated together to compete in the 10-10-10 film contest run by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Their film won this year's contest and was recently screened at the opening premiere of the second season of the Brooks Cinema Cafe. Katherine Waskul's script tells the story of a Middle Eastern scientist working in a laboratory in the days leading up to the tragic events on September 11, 2011. After 9/11, director Brent Rumble takes the audience on a journey of misunderstanding and prejudice surrounding the main character to a surprising conclusion. Katherine and Brent discuss their roles in the film's production and the challenges of working under the restrictions of the annual 10-10-10 film contest run by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

In the late winter and spring of 1970 the student ghetto of Isla Vista, California located next to UC Santa Barbara experienced 3 separate student lead riots. Student outrage over the firing of a popular professor and student oppression and acts of brutality by the police lead not only to campus wide protests but also protesters burning down the Bank of America, the shooting of Kevin Moran by the police, and then Governor Ronald Regan calling the students. "Cowardly little bums." And remarking, "if you want blood, I will give you blood." Featuring interviews with: Richard Flacks Bill Allen Randy Cox Photos By Joe Melchione and from the University Archive special collection Archival footage from Don't Bank on Amerika.
