Dr. Don Hammond, a Discovering PLACE educator at Beecher High School, was recently named one of 20 Chevrolet GREEN Educators of the Year (see http://www.greeneducator.org/Chevrolet-GREEN-Educator-Award-Winners-2011/Don-Hammond.php). Along with the award, GM's Project GREEN staff awarded Hammond the use of a Chevy Volt for his classroom to study. The ceremony took place Oct. 19, 2011 during a field trip to Ligon Nature Center, part of the Genesee Intermediate School District. GM also awarded Ligon a check for $2,000 (see http://www.abc12.com/story/15733250/science-teacher-honored-for-environmental-work). Hammond is an outstanding example of an educator seeking to sustain a series of related projects through combining grant funds. New Discovering PLACE teachers and partners learned more about his project during a professional development workshop held after his award presentation. Workshop participant responses: "Enjoyed hearing firsthand experiences." "I was encouraged to keep on to get our garden up and running." "Really enjoyed listening to the teachers share their successes." Discovering PLACE is a program of the University of Michigan-Flint Outreach Department. One of eight hubs of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative funded by the Great Lakes Fishery Trust, Discovering PLACE helps connect urban Flint-area students with their surroundings by supporting community and environmental projects which not only make curriculum more relevant, but benefit the area and help foster stewardship among students participating in the projects. In April 2011, Beecher High School students officially opened the nature trail and outdoor classroom they worked on with Dr. Don Hammond, their science teacher. Later that spring, the students became teachers when they welcomed Shelly Roberts' kindergartners from Beecher's Tucker Elementary. Discovering PLACE, an initiative of University Outreach at the University of Michigan-Flint, helped support the outdoor classroom and the Tucker kindergarten visit. The aim: To teach curriculum connecting students with their environment, help youth become comfortable in the outdoors and, eventually, to motivate students to become stewards of their environments and communities.
