1. Voting Rights Act post-Shelby and the Impact of Election Law Changes in NC

    The Carolina Law chapter of the ACLU hosted a discussion on the impact of North Carolina’s Voter Information Verification Act, as well as the future of the Voting Rights Act after the Supreme Court's decision in Shelby County v. Holder. Panelists: Professor Kareem Crayton holds a J.D. and a Ph.D. in political science. He teaches Election Law, Law and Social Science, and The Legislative Process. He also led in filing an amicus brief in Shelby County v. Holder. Congressman David Price holds a Ph.D. in political science and has taught public policy and political science at Duke University. He represents the Fourth Congressional District of North Carolina (which includes Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Senator Ellie Kinnaird, J.D., has served as Mayor of Carrboro and was a state senator for 17 years, through August 2013. She has been a vocal advocate for electoral reform and has received a number of awards for her public service. Allison Riggs holds a J.D. and an M.A. in history. She is a staff attorney at the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, where she specializes in voting rights. She has litigated voting-rights cases across the South and Southeast, including Florida and Texas. Chris Brook, a graduate of UNC Law, is Legal Director of the ACLU of North Carolina. He is currently litigating voting-rights cases and has spoken extensively on a number of voting-rights issues.
