              from Pierre Peyrot Added 18 0 1

Between 1941 and 1945, 250,000 US men and women served in the China Burma India Theatre of World War 2. For many of the young Americans who served there, an indelible bond was formed, which translated into the CBI Veterans Association. Founded at the end of the war, the organization survived until the summer of 2005. CBI Sound Off (The Souvenir Edition) traces the final year of the organization’s life, and uses this opportunity to examine the passing of a generation. A generation formed by the Great Depression and war, they created a dynamic America, which reshaped the world. Their values have become synonymous with what is considered positive in the United States. In their own words, our selected CBI vets tell different parts of a 60-year story. For example, Arthur and Vonnie Camp speak of a lifelong love found in India. For Chuck Linamen it was the adventure of flying over ‘the Hump’ into China. Joe Davis recalls what it was like to be a black man in the segregated US Army. Men and women describing aspects of the world they knew, and the changes they have witnessed. CBI Sound Off (The Souvenir Edition) looks at the forgotten theatre of World War 2, the friendships that were formed because of the shared experience, and the world that was made. It is personal and particular, with real emotion as these men and women meet for their final reunion. • Felix Cistolo: In My Own Words

from Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Added

Felix Cistolo was drafted in 1942 and assigned to the 80th Infantry Division. He arrived in France on Aug. 4, 1944, and was sent immediately into combat at Falaise Gap, where the Allies killed 10,000 German troops and trapped another 50,000, although some 20,000 Germans troops managed to escape to fight another day. He was wounded by artillery shrapnel at St. Genevieve on Sept. 13, 1944, nearly losing his right leg, and spent almost three months in the hospital in England. He was released in time to rejoin his outfit for the Battle of the Bulge, where he suffered frozen feet and what he calls a “slight wound that didn’t amount to anything.” After two more months in the hospital, he returned to his unit for the end of the war. This interview is a production of the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative, in partnership with the nonprofit Veterans Breakfast Club. It was recorded at the Heinz History Center, Pittsburgh, PA, November 23, 2012, as part of StoryCorps' National Day of Listening. http://VeteranVoicesofPittsburgh http://VeteransBreakfastClub
