Last week, we saw that Habakkuk cries out to God when he is overwhelmed by the sin that he sees and experiences in Judah. This is where Habakkuk’s faith starts: he turns to God. Habakkuk was assured by God that He would judge the Babylonians for their evil treatment of surrounding nations and especially of God’s chosen people. But, in the meantime, Judah was going to face some terrible suffering. Habakkuk doesn’t like it all! He wants revival! Revival always begins in heart of the individual.

It's a time when God’s people are ignoring God's law. They are perverting justice and hurting one another. All this sin that Habakkuk sees overwhelms him. He's confused as to why God isn’t doing anything to stop this. So, he prays to God and offers his very moving complaints. God tells him that He is raising up the godless and bloodthirsty, Babylonians as a tool to discipline Judah. He realises that the Babylonians aren’t the only ones who struggle with pride in their hearts. God is holy and perfect, therefore, every sin must be punished (Hab. 2:4 & Gal 3:1). So, today we have God's 2nd reply where He warns the “puffed up” that they would not go unpunished and will be taunted with prophetic utterances!

“The LORD's First Reply" (Habakkuk 1:1-11) According to the Talmud, Moses gave Israel 613 commandments, David reduced them to 10, Isaiah to 2, but Habakkuk to 1: 'the righteous shall live by His faith'. This book is about trusting that God knows what He is doing, especially when life seems unfair. Habakkuk knows for anyone to understand God’s responses, he’ll have to write down his complaints (Hab 2:2) through prayer about what he sees sin doing and ask God why He hasn’t done anything about it.

There have been many incidents since 9/11 that have heightened our concerns for safety and raised questions that searching hearts today have been pondering! The book of Habakkuk written some 2,600 years ago offers a very raw, yet full perspective of life. It focuses on his very frank prayerful complaints with God.
