                    An intimate portrait of a ten year-old girl and the emotional impact she experiences after being separated from her mother. Pastel is an intimate portrait of Liz, a ten year old girl attempting to deal with the absence of her mentally ill mother (Jocelyn), while being left alone with her emotionally distant father (Lars). The story is told with a combination of present day events and flashbacks revealing the relationship between the characters. Jocelyn must leave the family to receive treatment for her mental illness, and although Liz does not fully understand the situation, she deeply feels the separation from her mother.
