The idea behind this short film was to show how an architect of the distant future could work and how they could go to deserted environments and raise cities from the dust. This is the second brief to be given to us with a focus on matchmoving. I decided at an early stage that I wanted to move buildings and to have it look fairly believable. I filmed on the rooftops of my workplace and captured the surrounding buildings of the Brewery Quarter in Cardiff. I then created models of the buildings in the 3D application Maya and projected image planes of the buildings onto my models. I also tracked the buildings to mimic my original camera move. I created the synthetic sand clouds in After Effects using Particular. I was fairly happy with the outcome of this project, I learnt so much about Maya that I didn't know before and how useful the technique of projection is! There's still a few things that can be improved upon like some of the masks for the sky and balcony and the hand effects could do with some tracking and rotoscoping. This video was made for a university project and is non-profit, I did not create the music and do not own the music. Music used: Prayers by Mike Shinoda & Joseph Trapanese. The Raid Redemption OST. This piece was a collaboration with one of my best friends who is also on the same Visual Effects and Motion Graphics course as myself. This is the first project which had a focus on 3D camera tracking. Me and Isaac decided to film an alleyway and bring it into the future. We wanted to bring our piece into a bleak industrial future covered in air pollution and reminiscent of movies like Blade Runner and games like Deus Ex. We picked this particular alleyway because the right side has a very cool and futuristic looking gold wall which is the side of the John Lewis building in Cardiff. We filmed on a skateboard and then took the footage into PFTrack. At first the program was daunting but with time we figured it out and realised how awesome of an app it is. We created our elements in Illustrator and then took the elements and matchmoving information into After Effects. I was so happy with how this came out and being able to camera track in 2D and 3D seems crucial to me now and I can't imagine having to do future projects without it. We wrote a synopsis to set the scene. The year is 2042. China developed even quicker than anyone could have foreseen. Now the capitol of the world leading in technology whilst impacting the whole world culturally and socially. Cardiff now bought and owned by China is used solely to manufacture and produce the new power source named ‘Jianyu’ meaning building the universe. The district workers are paid in food and shelter and are unable to relocate. Although Jianyu is essential to run the new world capitol its byproducts are heavy polluting the once great country. Daylight has been blocked out by a thick fog of lung destroying Jianyu residue. The only thing to pierce the dust clouds are the acid rain storms. All animal life and plant life seize to exist in the uk and only basic food is imported. Old workers never grow to be very old, instead they just disappear. There’s a new food being served to the Jianju workers but some question the origin of the meat being used… This video was made for a university project and is non-profit, I did not create the music and do not own the music. Music used: Still Gone by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. Gone Girl OST.

For this project I decided to do a motion typography piece. My objectives where to choose a speech and then echo the words through typography. I had to focus on syncing the type with the audio and rhythm as well as animating the type. I chose a short story told by Rhoda in one of my favourite movies Another Earth. One of my passions is for beautiful typography. I learnt so much about type and the many ways in which it can be animated during this project. I purchased Okaytext Light by Okaycat from myfonts.com which I thought was a really nice clean subtly sci-fi looking type. I also learnt Illustrator during this project and created all my elements with the application like the spaceship and geography of the earth and then I placed them into After Effects. I used the Vostok 1 which was the first human spaceflight in history as reference to draw and create the spaceship. I really enjoyed this project and was quite happy with how it turned out sadly due to time constraints of the brief I was unable to fit all of the speech into my film. This video was made for a university project and is non-profit, I did not create the music and do not own the music. I did not record the speech and do not own the speech. Music used: Cosmonaut by Fall on your sword. Another Earth OST. Speech used: from the film Another Earth.

This is the first project where we had to use Maya to complete a brief which specified to render out a 3D TV Ident. I seen this as an opportunity to create a Dragon Ball Z themed 3D environment for the TV channel Cartoon Network. Some of my fondest memories as a child are running home with my school friends to get home in time to watch our favourite tv show. I really enjoyed creating this environment and I'm hopeful a DBZ fan would realise that this TV ident takes place in the DBZ universe. Maya was so hard to grasp as a first year student and looking back I still didn't really know how to use Maya even after this project but after some more tutorials and more time I started to understand. This video was made for a university project and is non-profit, I did not create the music and do not own the music. Music used: DragonBallZ by Falconer & Bruce. Label - Faulconer Productions Music.
