CONTENUTI 1. Prologo 2. Gli inizi - Dalle miniature ai dipinti 3. What was the society in which Jan van Eyck and his direct predecessors produced their work really like? What was new in the Burgundy empire, how was the church and society developing and what role did the arts play in it? In this video, Herman Pleij, emeritus professor of historical Dutch Literature, places the developments shown in the exhibition The Road to Van Eyck in a broader social context. A medieval artist built up his panel painting in various layers. This video shows the process step by step. Starting point is a detail from the Norfolk Triptych (1414-1420) from the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which is on show in the exhibition The road to Van Eyck (October 13, 2012 till February 10, 2013). By combining research into the paint layers with material-technical data such as x-ray and infrared photography, we have been able to make an accurate reconstruction of this detail. The reconstruction was made by art historian and painting restorer Charlotte Caspers. Reconstruction: Charlotte Caspers Camera and editing: Wouter Schreuder Subtitles: Einion

The three Marys at the Tomb restored In October 2012, The Three Marys at the Tomb will be on show as part of the ‘The path to Van Eyck’ exhibition. This panel is colourful, exceptional and refined, and to allow it to be shown at its best, it has been removed from its frame and will now be cleaned, studied and restored. A video is being made about the restoration, exposing the unusual history of the painting. This teaser highlights some of the questions being asked by experts. This restoration has been made possible with the support of Nedspice. More video's on: www.arttube.nl
