“Men come and go, cities rise and fall, whole civilizations appear and disappear - the earth remains, slightly modified. The earth remains, and the heartbreaking beauty where there are no hearts to break... I sometimes choose to think, no doubt perversely, that man is a dream, thought an illusion, and only rock is real. Rock and sun.” -Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire -- "In contemporary culture, the American desert stands as a monumental symbol of emptiness, a vast, seemingly infinite landscape that has traditionally served as a powerful embodiment of the 'natural,' the untouched and the sublime. But a journey through the space of the desert reveals that the experience of its immensity and silence is just a mirage. Just beneath the muteness of its outward appearance, the sounds and traces of all kinds of activities, experiments, mysteries, fictions and utopias can be heard... If we want to know the future of America and its current excesses, a starting point might be to look here, in its 'empty' landscape: not as our predecessors did, as a vast expanse to be filled with the products of an expanding empire, but as a territory that is already incredibly, fascinatingly full." -Michael Kubo, Desert America: Territory of Paradox -- Shot at the White Pocket, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, Arizona. Vermillion Cliffs - Cliff Dweller's Stone House built by Blanche Russell in 1927-30-ish. She drove with her husband through this area in 1927 and her car broke down. She decided it wouldn't be bad to live in the area so she made a homestead there. She quit her dancing job and moved there to take care of her husband who had tuberculosis. Music credits at end of video. Apple Color and Final Cut Pro used for post production. Camera Assistant: Desislava Yordanova

This is part 2 of the Web Series I am producing taking you on a trip around America's Grand Circle of national parks. Starting in Las Vegas, you will travel out to The Grand Canyon, and then up to Lake Powell, across the Monument Valley, up to Arches Nat Pk, across to Bryce Canyon and home via Zion National Park. This episode covers our journey as we left the eastern gate of the Grand Canyon National Park on the south rim, up through northern Arizona, across Marble Canyon and then on into the Kaibab National Forest to The Grand Canyon lodge on the north rim. We then explore the various scenic lookouts that are easily accessible on the north rim of the GCNP. ---- Music by Francois Bonne - "Grand Espaces" Licensed under creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ Available from www.jamendo.com/en/album/40979 Frozen Silence - "E" Licensed under creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ Available from www.jamendo.com/en/album/49125 Marc Teichert - "Irish Meadow" Licensed under creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ Available from www.jamendo.com/en/album/56298 Foley Sound from freesound.org Dynamicell - "Wind Howling at night" Licensed under creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/ Available from http://www.freesound.org/people/Dynamicell/sounds/17553/ Dobrodie - "Forest" Licensed under creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Available from http://www.freesound.org/people/dobroide/sounds/22384/ Mitchell Sounds - "Highway interior car" Licensed under creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/ Available from: http://www.freesound.org/people/mitchellsounds/sounds/58941/ --- Camera: Sony HDR-HC9 HDV Handycam Editing: Adobe Premiere CS5.5 + Magic Bullet Suite 11.1 + Mercalli V2 Stabilisation
