We are three independent filmmakers telling the story of the most remote music festival in the world - the Festival au Desert - and the battle to make it happen. Once a year, just outside of Timbuktu, the greatest rock and blues musicians from across Africa and around the world come together to sustain peace through music. What makes this festival so unique? First, it’s held in the mystical land of Tuareg nomads where camels race during the day and, when the temperature drops, the desert moon rises, the sand dunes shift, and the festival-goers become immersed in the complex musical rhythms that have been rocking this desert for the last thousand years. While the music plays musicians speak and sing about local issues including the rights of women, of Tuaregs, and of the celebration of Islam. The festival is a homegrown approach to sustaining peace, democracy, and for developing tourism in Mali. Please support the Essakane Film on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/bBzHmf

This was my first of many meetings with Vieux Farka Toure... there was a fantastic wall-of-sound from the band's guitars in such a small space... sent shivers. At the time of writing he's off to South Africa to play the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony... glad I caught him whilst I could.

Fortunately my schedule allows me to be free at noon on Thursdays for BAM's R&B series, and fortunately that series extends to a wide breadth of African musicians. (This year also included Tony Allen and Michael Rose.) The one show I could not miss was Mali's searing guitarist, Vieux Farka Toure (http://www.vieuxfarkatoure.com). As with every time I've seen the man, I sat, transfixed, in awe, and appreciative of his easy going and, as you can see here during "Fafa," smileful demeanor.
