Eric Standley is an associate professor in the School of Visual Arts in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. Standley’s artwork is truly cutting edge, with layer upon layer of intricately laser-cut sheets of paper forming a rich, colorful, and detailed whole. He is a pioneer in the techniques used to create his art, which recently started an international buzz with art collectors, blogs, and media, including Wired Magazine UK, Metaal Magazine Netherlands and Discovery Canada. His vector drawings were initially inspired by the geometry in Gothic and Islamic architectural ornamentation. The pieces are painstakingly assembled from laser-cut paper layered to create elaborate three-dimensional works of art. Often these works are created using well over 100 layers of paper and can take months of planning and drawing. The result is so intricately detailed that the pieces must be viewed from multiple perspectives to be fully appreciated.

Virginia Tech College of Engineering researchers have unveiled a life-like, autonomous robotic jellyfish the size and weight of a grown man, 5 foot 7 inches in length and weighing 170 pounds, as part of a U.S. Navy-funded project. The prototype robot, nicknamed Cyro, is a larger model of a robotic jellyfish the same team – headed by Shashank Priya of Blacksburg, Va., and professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech – unveiled in 2012. The earlier robot, dubbed RoboJelly, is roughly the size of a man’s hand, and typical of jellyfish found along beaches.

With a completion date scheduled for 2013, the Center for the Arts is being built on campus at the corner of Main Street and Alumni Mall and is sparking the imagination of many who are curious about what it will look like when it is complete. Renderings of the building’s interior and exterior provide a glimpse of the plan, but Dane Webster, assistant professor of animation and 3-D modeling and area coordinator of creative technologies in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies’ School of Visual Arts, wanted to craft a richer experience with a virtual visit to the center. With help from two of his students — Chris Russell and Mallory Brangan — Webster used models and single-frame renderings from architecture firms Snohetta and STV to create a virtual fly through of the center. Fly throughs are animated videos that allow users to virtually move through a structure, getting a close-up view of a building.
