There is something in the way she moves. With grace and confidence, you’d never guess Irene Wieland is closing in on 90 years old. “It’s always important to keep moving because if you don’t - you won’t move,” says Wieland. She credits daily dance moves with keeping her young. Fun yes, but she’s also working to stay flexible and stable. “I think it keeps your joints moving. And if your joints don’t move well you have a chance of falling down.” “We track data on all of the mechanisms of injuries that we see through the Trauma Center. Certainly falls ranks high, if not the highest, at certain age groups,” says Mark Tesoro. He is an injury prevention analyst with Lee Memorial Health System. To keep people right side up, Lee Memorial Health System is going proactive with fall prevention, a top cause of injury and death in older Americans. “We’re doing vision screenings and balance assessments and hearing screenings. We’re trying to try to cover all of those different aspects of falls to try to eliminate those risks,” says Tesoro. There are three spheres that potentially cause falls: the physical aspect which covers health conditions from vision and hearing to fitness level, disease and neurological issues. The behavioral aspect looks at the choices you make and how you move. Finally, the environmental aspect which includes things in your surrounding that might trip you up. “If you’re falling, you’re falling for a reason and we need to identify what that reason is.” Balance issues aren’t going to get Irene down. “I try to keep my balance, I do everything possibly I can. In the dance field of course,” says Wieland. Taking the proper steps can be an investment in your health. Vision screening is not sufficient to eliminate childhood vision impairment due to amblyopia; treatment must be consistent and thorough. Often spectacle therapy is sufficient to allow children excellent vision despite substantial amblyopia risk factors such as high farsightedness, astigmatism or anisometropia.

Vision loss due to childhood amblyopia resembles acquisition of swimming skills and drowning in terms of age-dependence, impact and treatment. Early detection of amblyopia risk factors (poor focus resembles lack of buoyancy) allows the option to provide protection (spectacles resemble life preservers) and may avoid the need for rescue treatment (patching the better eye resembles CPR).
