          • The Power of Friends (Ladies of The Lake)

from john joe Daly Added 817 1 0

On a cold February day in Ireland (5°C and -1° with wind chill), I had the pleasure of spending the day with 3 amazing kiting ladies. From the moment we all meet up, at a petrol station in a little town in the middle of nowhere, the group buzz between the 3 was just great 'craic'. The spirit of encouragement and excitement continued all day long from the set-up, on the water, after session warm up tea, and pack down. It's this sense of enthusiasm and energy that pushes you to keep trying new stuff on the water, while you could just spend you time cruising up and down, or even worse...just stay at home by the warm fire instead of covering yourself head to toe in 5mm of neoprene wetsuit and throwing yourself into an icy cold lake! This is the power of having good kite friends. Respect ladies. Sorry about the sound during the interviews, I forgot my microphone....DOH!

from Wexford Festival Opera Added 805 0 1

24, 27, 30 October, 2 November For booking information visit www.wexfordopera.com A behind the scenes look at the upcoming production of L'arlesiana by Franceso Cilèa at the 61st Wexford Festival Opera with behind the scenes footage as well as interviews with David Angus (Conductor), Rosetta Cucchi (Director), Dmitry Golovnin (Federico), Mariangela Sicilia (Vivetta) and Christopher Robertson (Baldassarre). Love pervades this story of a young man, Federico, and his family and friends in the countryside near Arles in the south of France. But this is no rural idyll, this is real life. The passions and emotions of Federico, his mother Rosa, Vivetta, who has always loved him, and Metifio, his rival in love, have a powerful universal resonance. Cilèa’s 1897 opera depicts the superstitions surrounding a handicapped child, Federico’s obsessive love for a mysterious woman, his jealousy of Metifio, his mother’s all-consuming love for him, and the shy Vivetta, who loves Federico and suffers agonies of misery over him. At the centre of it all is l’Arlesiana, the woman from Arles. She never appears but – unwittingly, perhaps – pulls the strings as they all dance to her tune.

                  from Documenting Rosslare Added 751 1 1

The light was first exhibited on 4th June 1815 and in foggy weather a bell was tolled every half minute. The tower was and still is painted white. Two serious mishaps occurred during the construction of the tower, one on the night of 18th October 1812 when 10 out of 24 workmen were swept off the rock and drowned during a violent storm. The second was on 22nd August 1814 when a stone cutter fell 72 feet (22m) to his death. During wartime small rocks like Tuskar were very vulnerable to drifting mines which had parted from their moorings. One of these mines exploded when it struck the rock on 2nd December 1941 injuring two assistant keepers, W. J. Cahill and P. Scanlan. Both were brought ashore by the Rosslare lifeboat but unfortunately Patrick Scalan died in hospital the next day. Reliefs of rocks and islands by helicopter started in October 1969, at that time Tuskar was not on the list but by 1972 a 10m diameter concrete pad had been built on the rock in readiness for the reliefs which commenced on 30th January 1975 and are carried out from Ballygillane near Rosslare Harbour. On 31st March 1993 the lighthouse was converted to automatic operation and the keepers were withdrawn from the station. The station is in the care of an Attendant and Assistant Attendant and the aids to navigation are also monitored via a telemetry link from Irish Lights Dun Laoghaire.
