This was a project I did for my Buddhist Art and Culture class at Ringling College of Art and Design. I found a large format image of a Tibetan Wheel of Life and separated the elements into many many layers in Photoshop, then animated those elements growing on in a variety of ways, using various techniques in After Effects.

Jonathan and Michelle ducked into the souk during a white out windstorm as we were closing down the Wheel of Life at Burning Man 2014. After some conversation they mentioned they were recently engaged, I mentioned that I am an ordained Dudeist. They asked me to officiate their wedding then and there, which I did, in the windstorm, using a bullhorn so the people who had gathered together could hear the ceremony over the sound of the wind against the roof canvas.

Churning is a collection of images and culmination of thoughts. The Buddhist philosophy of 'the wheel of life' has been symbolized through the churning of the potters wheel. The action of molding the pot is calming and almost meditative. The music of chants has carefully been selected, to carry the emblem further. However the breaking point on the wheel is the focus. Force destroys the natural order of things.....or does it.....is the breaking point also a part of this growth and the circle.....some questions I am asking mostly, myself. Hope this video resonates with you not just visually and aesthetically but also at the deeper realms of your soul. May the journey continue.

              • Interconnectedness: a zoetrope art machine by Bridget Riversmith

This machine uses animation technology that dates back to 180 AD in China. A popular home entertainment device in the 1800s, the zoetrope [Greek: zoe (life) + trope (wheel or turn)] displays a closed loop of animated images to the viewer who peers through slits in the top of the drum as it turns. This version of the zoetrope reuses an old record player to turn the drum, and adds a recycled cardboard tube, or "scope" to help further focus the viewer's attention on one image at a time. The closed loop of a zoetrope serves as a metaphor for the interconnected nature of all people and everything that exists.

Paper is one of the most versatile and beautiful mediums available to makers, able to create and reproduce entire worlds at the cut of a blade. After years of experience perfecting this craft, The Makerie Studio teamed up with Director André Gidoin to magically bring one of these worlds to life, by creating and filming a hand made paper Zoetrope. A zoetrope is a device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures. Often referred to as the Wheel Of Life, we were inspired to tell the story of one zoetrope in particular, that one night came to life. All filmed in camera, the horses on the carousel are spaced to spin in sync with the camera’s frame rate to create the illusion of motion. Each horse is carefully studied to follow the one before it, so that once at speed they appear to be galloping. The zoetrope was filmed surrounded by a multitude of smaller carousels, all hand made for The Makerie Studio’s New York launch. ------------------------------- A film by André Gidoin & The Makerie Studio.
