Curious giant manta ray surprises manta researcher! The manta researcher was collecting a photo ID, used to monitor population trends that can help identify the effects of fishing pressure on this population of manta rays. Full story: http://wildaid.org/news/manta-rays-curious-and-vulnerable-giants-sea-3 WildAid, Manta Trust and Planeta Oceano, with support from Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, are now working to shore up protection for manta rays in Peru. Working closely with coastal fishing communities, we are seeking to understand how mantas and mobulas are affected by local fisheries, both directed and as by catch, and how to reduce manta mortality. Building off our community based work in Indonesia, where in 2014 Indonesia declared the world's largest manta sanctuary (http://voices.nationalgeographic.com/2014/09/17/transforming-indonesias-manta-fisheries/), we are now helping create opportunities for fishing communities in Peru to engage in sustainable livelihoods based on manta tourism. The project is in its early stages but the initial findings are quite positive. WildAid has a global campaign to protect manta rays, focusing on demand reduction for manta gills in China (http://wildaid.org/mantas) and range-state protections where regional manta populations are under threat from fisheries.

        • Full Frame in the Big Apple: An Episode of “Epic” Proportions!

Full Frame is in New York City this week and our guests are truly worthy of “the Big Apple.” They’re raising awareness about elephant poaching, combating bullying in schools, and teaching host Mike Walters a few court side tricks. They also happen to be some of the most iconic basketball players of all time. Basketball, one of America’s favorite past times, has become one of the fastest growing sports around the world. For the 2014 season, the National Basketball League (NBA) boasted a record 101 international players representing 37 countries. The increasing diversity of the players is a reflection of the worldwide reach of the sport. Take for example, the 2013 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs; the game was broadcast in over 215 countries and in 47 different languages. Perhaps the best indicator of basketball’s global impact is its ranking as the most popular youth sport, which means a growing pool of talent and an even larger fan base. With basketball’s increasingly global presence, many of the sport’s stars have used their platform on the international stage to become advocates for issues such as conservation, education, and human rights. This week, Full Frame features interviews with: basketball super-star Yao Ming, whose new documentary “Saving Africa’s Giants with Yao Ming” is airing globally this week; Harlem Globetrotters Cheese Chisholm and Scooter Christensen who are traveling the world as Ambassadors of Goodwill; and NBA Analyst Jared Zwerling who fills Mike Walter in on the secrets to basketball’s global presence. Tune in to Full Frame on CCTV America at 6:00 pm ET on November 22, 2014. With a false believe in the “magical” powers of rhino horn, Viet Nam has the highest consumption of rhino horn usage, causing a dangerous decrease in the number of rhinos left in the world. Rhino horn is made of keratin, the same substance that makes up our hair and fingernails. I will be performing "Elephant In My Heart" at the March in San Francisco. Info at: http://www.MarchForElephants.org (locally SF) http://www.march4elephantsandrhinos.org (globally). Did you know that elephants are in danger of extinction? One elephant is killed every 15 minutes. Illegal ivory traders are killing elephants for their tusks. Guest Marty Perlmutter participated in the first International March For Elephants. Fall 2013. Learn what you can do to help the elephants and spread the word. I was inspired to write "Elephant In My Heart" after hearing Elephant Conservation Activist Marty Perlmutter speak at our local TV station. His impassioned and intelligent plea to Save the Elephants touched my heart. Besides being majestic and intelligent animals, elephants are vital to maintain forests and preserve ecological harmony. To spread his message with the world, I interviewed Marty on my Marin TV show "Musical Medicine with Soleil Dakota." In the interview, Marty speaks about Chelsea Clinton’s passion for these majestic animals, and the Clinton Global Initiative’s efforts to save them. Elephants are crucial to our ecosystem. Chelsea has described elephants as “sort of the honeybees of the African savannah or their forest environment.” Listen to Marty Perlmutter’s informative message at: http://www.musicalmedicinewithsoleil.com I created the "Elephant In My Heart" music video and debuted it along with this interview with guest Marty Perlmutter, Elephant Conservation Activist. Aired on Marin TV May 4th, 2014. Musical Medicine with Soleil Dakota Producer: Soleil Dakota Director: Patricia Hartigan Bloom

A Nick Chevallier production for the Conservation Action Trust and OSCAP, that illustrates the folly of legalising the trade in Rhino Horn, and the dire effects that this could have on the survival of the species. Special thanks are due to the Environmental Investigation Agency for allowing the use of archive footage, and to WildAid for permission to include Jackie Chan in "Tools of the Trade" as aired on primetime Network TV and screened in many public places throughout China, and soon to be available for broadcast in Vietnam.
